Tips For Writers

A story follows what a character wants, what she’ll do to get it, and what costs she’ll have to pay on the way. The journey of your character is paramount, as your readers will track what she learns, the decisions she makes, and how her life changes as a result. This is the essence of myth – which is a journey leading to oneself. Myth relates to all stories, not just fantasy. You can use a physical journey as the basis for this, even if it’s only from one side of a city to another. A good example of a journey is in ‘Stand By Me’, when four boys walk on an adventure to see a dead body. Along the way, they discover a lot about themselves.

Flow is one of the most important elements of a good story. Ensure ease of reading for your audience, so that they’re not jarred by complex language or names that are difficult to pronounce. They’ll just substitute gibberish instead, and the human eye singles out difficult words. While you believe you’re being clever, most likely, your readers will find it a turn off.

Another key element is pace. A slow plod will cause the reader’s interest to decline, although it allows for greater detail. A hectic pace will take the reader on an adrenaline saturated rollercoaster ride, although it will exclude detail. This pace is perfect for suspense, whereas a slower pace is more appropriate for literary fiction, as it allows character development and analysis. Most genres strike a balance between the two.

My third key element is emotion. This is what really drives your story, not your flawless prose or your technical genius. Readers must feel what is happening to your characters, be joyful in their successes and tearful in their heartache. They must travel the journey by your character’s side, and care what happens to them. Make your reader feel excitement, tears, triumph, disgust, annoyance, and laughter.

Some authors give strict technical advice about the use of adverbs, semi-colons and prologues, to name a few. Excellent flow, pace, and emotion trumps technical factors, because readers don’t pick up a book to check out how many adverbs an author used. They read to be transported to another world. Perfect technicalities cannot mask a lame and pointless story. Many of Amazon’s best sellers are not works of technical genius: they merely take the fantasies of readers, translate them into words using the authors’ hearts and souls, and sell them back to the world.

What are the ingredients of a good story? Make a wish list of everything you’d like to see in a book or film, what interests you passionately, what entertains you, and the themes that capture your imagination. Choose some key elements that naturally intersect, and build your vision from there.

Don’t neglect the depth of your story world. It’s not necessary to describe everything down to the trees and the soil, but you should seek to capture an evocative snapshot of your world. Sometimes a bold metaphor can perform this job more effectively than a whole paragraph of description.

Play around with ‘what if’ scenarios. If it can happen, then let it.

When developing your lead character, remember, he/she must drive the action. This character doesn’t have to be instantly likeable or perfect. Sometimes, the most fascinating characters are those who are challenging, complex, and make mistakes, just like us.

Don’t develop one character and neglect the dimensionality of your supporting cast. Where relevant to the story, allow them to express themselves, without sidetracking. See all your characters together as part of an interconnected web, who interact, and affect each other’s emotions and decisions.

SG: How…how delightful. So difficult finding good help these days, don’t you know… *frantically searches through black hole of a purse for the damn hand sanitizer*

Now that we’re settled in, let’s chat. Shall we?

SG: Absolutely!

BK: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

SG: I’ve always written, from the time I could read. I used to rewrite the endings to my favorite books to make them “better”. Hey, wait. Come to think of it... I INVENTED FAN FICTION! *is amazed*

BK: *Clappinghands* I've always wondered who to thank for that! Please share with us how your current release came to life...

SG: First, I’m a nerd. Second, my brother’s a nerd. Third, nerdy siblings have nerdy conversations. That being said, we were talking about how it was too bad the Nephilim (angel-human hybrids) had been wiped out by heavenly wrath, because they would have made some kickass superheroes, at least as good as The X-Men. Then the giant guy, Goliath, came into the conversation, and since he was supposed to be descended from the Nephilim, we speculated how cool it would be if a few of them had escaped annihilation, only to have their descendants living among us. That conversation happened years ago, but I’ve never forgotten the “what if” germ of an idea of the Nephilim secretly existing somewhere in the world.

BK: I love it already. Do you let your characters tell the story, or do you often fight with them on the direction it will take?

SG: They gang up on me. They won’t let me sleep or have any fun. They hold me hostage until I tell their story, like they think the universe revolves around them. Ugh. *sinks into pity-party*

BK: I know how that is. It sucks! LOL. How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?

SG: I avoid reading whatever genre that happens to have caught my attention as a writer. While I’m currently focused on writing PNR, sci-fi rom and contemporary rom, what I’m reading is historical rom, UF and New Adult fiction. Fun stuff, but I’m not going to be writing it any time soon. ;)

BK: Which character was your favorite to write for in this story? Why?

SG: ZEKE! Oh, Zeke, my deliciously angsty guy. ^_^ He’d thought he was the first in his family lineage to escape the Nephilim “curse” when he was born without wings, but no such luck. He might be a late-bloomer, but he’s definitely got the angelic DNA going on. Zeke’s got such a noble side too. Even though he’s certain he’s cursed simply because he was born, he still does his best to use his powers for good. And it’s a good thing—when a malevolent spirit targets the heroine Kendall Glynn, Zeke’s the only one who can save her.

BK: Tell us about the one scene you had the most fun writing…

SG: Ha! It’s got to be when Kendall sees Zeke’s wings for the first time. Her shock at the extra anatomy is…understandable. *laughs*

BK: If you were stranded on an island, which character in your books would you most want to be stranded with and why, and what is one thing that would be a must-have?

SG: Ack, that’s a tough one! I’d have to choose Zeke, because he DOES strand himself on an island with Kendall, the Farallon Islands to be precise, and things turn out great for them. As for the must-have item…if I’m stranded there with Zeke with nothing else to do, I’d be thinking along the same lines as Kendall—I’d want an economy-sized box of condoms.

BK: *LMAO* Now for a little fun, tell us a bit about what your office looks like. Do you need silence to write?

SG: *sigh* My sad little office is so boring. The focal point is this ancient pre-fab computer desk built in the 1990’s, back when desktops were HUGE. This desk is a particle-board monstrosity, about the size of a smart car. One day, I’m going to invite all my friends in to attack it with sledgehammers. And silence is the last thing I need to write. Usually I have Pandora blaring, or a movie I’ve already seen going in the background. Sometimes I’ve got both going on at once.

BK: What do you like to do when you're not writing?

SG: I’m a figure skating pro when I’m not stuck in editing hell. If I’m not listening to awesome pieces of music to skate to, I’m either on the ice or working out choreography.

BK: Well, who knew!? Awesome! I like figure skating. Watching it that is. If I tried to skate I'd be in ICU from a broken neck or dead. What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you?

SG: I can’t throw a Frisbee. *waits for laughter*

BK: *LOL*, I haven't thrown frisbee in forever. Maybe you can show me sometime, *Smirks*. What is the craziest thing you’ve ever wanted to write, or have written, even if it never reached public eyes?

SG: Oh, I can guarantee you it’ll never reach public eyes! I was still in my teens when I wrote this ridiculous college-aged ghost story piece, which really had more to do with having rambunctious sex in odd places than an actual plot. *dies*

BK: Great foundation. Sex is always good :). What is one piece of advice you can give to aspiring writers/authors?

SG: Don’t give up!

BK: What can we expect from you in the future?

SG: Wheee, I’m so glad you asked! In addition to NOBODY’S ANGEL releasing this month, the second book in The Earth Angels series, SAVAGE ANGEL, is out in February. The third book, WOUNDED ANGEL will be out in May, and the fourth and final book in the series, DANGEROUS ANGEL, has just been completed (yay!). And lastly, my latest venture into series writing is coming in July. Carina Press is releasing the first book in an open-ended, small town contemporary romance series. The first book is UGLY DUCKLINGS FINISH FIRST, a high school reunion story, and the series is called Bitterthorn, Texas. Ummm…and that’s it for this year. :D

A competitive figure skater from the age of eight, Stacy Gail began writing stories in between events to pass the time. By the age of fourteen, she told her parents she was either going to be a figure skating coach who was also a published romance writer, or a romance writer who was also a skating pro. Now that we’re settled in, let’s chat. Shall we? Of course (Sips drink.) Does this have wormwood in it?

BK: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I don’t know if it’s something you are or something you chose, or a little of both. I’m an introvert who loves words, is interested by human nature and has a lot of issues, in my opinion that makes for a good writer.

BK: Please share with us how your current release came to life...

I was in a situation where my college had closed and with nothing to lose I did what I have always done, write, only I didn’t stop this time. There’s a saying that to write you need to sit at your type writer and open up a vein. I guess I came up with the idea of writing a good werewolf story in high school. I like paranormal themes and wolves and goddesses.

BK: Do you let your characters tell the story, or do you often fight with them on the direction it will take?

My characters know how they will act. I explore them. It depends on what other characters do and they react off each other. With Lila her inner involuntary urges make her behave in a way she wouldn’t have otherwise and her desire to behave that way over rides her own better judgment and changes the course of the story. So my characters direct the story. It’s very organic. I like for them to surprise me.

BK: How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?

I write what I know, about feelings that I have felt. It’s the details that make each story individual because really it’s all the same few archetypes repeated a million times. I wanted to be a little unexpected. I like a few red herrings. To be a good writer is to be able to take words and place them together in a way which is different and yet describes perfectly the moment and the story you wish to convey. That is what sets you apart.

BK: Which character was your favorite to write for in this story? Why?

Lila grew throughout the story and I love that growth and the imagery it evokes. But I must admit Cres is a fav. Both Reid and Cres have a special place in my heart. I like to write about characters we wish we were or wish we knew.

Characters who don’t seem nice on the outside are sometimes the best and most loyal friends. The more damaged and yet kind in spite of it, the better. That’s what I like to explore.

BK: Tell us about the one scene you had the most fun writing…

I like the tortured bits, the bits drenched in pain. The best time I had was editing with my critique partner. We laughed and laughed when we found a mistake. Fortunately we both had the same juvenile sense of humor.

BK: If you were stranded on an island, which character in your books would you most want to be stranded with and why, and what is one thing that would be a must-have?

Without a doubt Cres. She is fierce and loyal and just. A working computer with a live internet connection, a cocktail and a reclining sun bed.

BK: Now for a little fun, tell us a bit about what your office looks like. Do you need silence to write? 

No. Noise. T.v, radio, children asking questions, dogs barking, cars zooming by, piles of paper and strange out of sequence jotted notes. You get used to what you have to work with, although I do like the night – probably because the world is quiet and I hear my thoughts. It’s a time I can do what I want uninterrupted. As long as I am not completely drained and exhausted I can write.

BK: What do you like to do when you're not writing?

Think about writing. Reading. Soaping. Creating. Cooking – I like to work without recipes. It’s more thrilling. Catch a bit of reality T.v.

BK: What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you?

I am a terrible speller. Sshh....

BK: What is the craziest thing you’ve ever wanted to write, or have written, even if it never reached public eyes?

I wrote a children’s book about my dog which is jumbled in a pile of notes somewhere and sometimes I think about writing a horror – but it would probably be more thriller.

BK: What is one piece of advice you can give to aspiring writers/authors?

Be true to yourself and write what you know, about something you love. Like that old saying, write what you want to read. I think there is a perception out there that writers hang out in their pajamas all day, eating cheese sandwiches. That may or may not be true :) however we also work really hard and long hours, so to work at it.

BK: What can we expect from you in the future?

More of the Wolf Sirens series. WS3 Night Fall which will be out in 2013, and maybe a fairytale novel... I have some ideas.

The secret hidden behind the crystal eyes of the pack is as bright as day and dark as the shadow of night. Werewolves are strong, forsaken to live perpetually as man and beast. Their kind never feel the cold and can heal fast but the chill of death can still strike them. Like all Demi Gods they are not immortal. The greatest rate of mortality amongst them is caused by the hunters – the chosen few, selected by the goddess to protect the town from the monsters - the wolves that had kept me close but refused to change me. I had a different path, not yet clear to me. I understand now why they didn’t make me one of them. I couldn’t ignore the calling of the crescent moon.

Often she thought about herself, what she had become in life after her drowning when she was only four.

A mutant. An abomination. A freak.

She knew there were others like her out there in the world as well. Xander, for example. Even Embree, but Embree was dormant. Carly’s senses told her that Embree was alive, but she was alone and in a very dark place.

Just the thought of what might have become of Embree caused a chill to rise on her skin and she shuddered. Would that happen to her someday, too?

Maybe Daniel was ‘something else’, as well.

Sometimes she would be walking down the street and her eyes would connect with a perfect stranger, and she knew by instinct alone they were different. She knew, and they knew, too. But neither spoke a word. It was in the eyes. Whether they were like her, she was unsure.

And Daniel had those eyes as well. Eyes that had the ability to draw her in if she allowed him. Eyes that were an unusual, ethereal pale blue.

But she didn’t fear him. Although mentally tired, she was physically strong when threatened. That was Xander’s gift to her. Just one encounter with him and she was suddenly able to leap higher, run faster than ever before. If confronted, she was certain she could outmatch her opponent. Knowing her abilities gave her the confidence that helped her cope alone all of these years.
