***** The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

Picture The Iron King by Julie Kagawa was awesome.  Full of action,  twists and unexpected turns I couldn't put this down until I was at the end.

Meghan Chase was an outcast.  Always being picked on at school,  no real friends accept her friend from childhood,  Robbie.

Robbie was a bit strange though,  never allowing Meghan to come to his house always with an excuse.  In all the years they have been friends,  Meghan has never even met his parents.  When a popular jock sends a mass message to all the kids at school,  embarrassing Meghan to no end,  Robbie comes to the rescue.  As a girl is teasing Meghan while Robbie is leading her to the bus,  he mumbles something incoherent,  but the outcome doesn't go unnoticed by Meghan.

Vowing to never return to school,  Meghan faces bigger problems when she gets home.  She finds her mother unconscious,  her little brother isn't her little brother.  The time has come for Robbie to tell Meghan the truth.

With all the glamour removed,  Meghan learns that Fairies actually exist.  Now she must accept what she has learned and save her little brother Ethan.

Entering Nevernever was not exactly what she expected.  Everyone hunts her,  the half-breed child of the Summer Court King.  Not knowing what her true existence means,  she fights her way through the Nevernever,  fighting creatures that only exist in our dreams.

Meeting a few "friends" along the way,  Meghan constantly finds herself bargaining her life away in order to save her brother.  Robbie,  actually Robin Goodfellow,  leads her through getting them into trouble and eventually leaving her in the hands of his worst enemy,  Ash.

Ash has orders from his Queen to return the child,  Meghan,  to her court,  but Ash never expected to fall in love.  Now they face the torturous demons in search of her brother,  Meghan only wanting to return him to their home.

The thing is,  technology is getting in the way.  Now the dreams of humans is for better,  stronger machines,  and the creation of the Iron King is born.

Meghan is faced with the ultimate decision of all,  and must choose wisely in order to survive.  Will she follow the correct path?  Will love conquer all in the end?

Kagawa did such a fantastic job with The Iron King.  I found myself swept away into a world magnificently created.  Rooting for Robin and for love,  I couldn't put this book down until I was finished.  I loved it and can't wait to read the next in the series.

**** The Other Side of Life by Jess C. Scott

Picture The Other Side of Life by Jess C. Scott was a pleasant read.  A definite change from the normal fantasy novels I've come across.

Anya London and her best friend Leticia made a life out of being thieves.  When they enter the old Stone Church,  they had no idea that someone was lingering about listening to their conversation.

Nin had been looking for someone to help him and his crew to find a missing parchment to an Elven poem.  When he hears Anya and Leticia talking,  he eavesdropped,  getting a sense he could entrust these two girls to his mission.  Finally approaching them after noticing they hold an old Elven Goblet,  he bargains for the enchanted piece to return it to its rightful owner.  Promising them another treasure,  we meet Tavia and Dresan.  Tavia is actually Nin's cousin,  though he plays her off as a girlfriend.

Things come to a head and both parties faceoff,  only to realize these two girls are exactly who they need in order to accomplish retrieving the missing parchment.  Taking them to their underground lair,  they introduce the girls to their true identities,  they are Elves.  After the initial shock,  Anya feels a connection to Nin,  and agrees to help the trio,  even after they state that they have already failed and were almost killed.

Putting their plan into action,  Anya goes home to research Elven history.  When Julius,  Leticia's boyfriend sees what she is looking into,  he swears they never existed.  There is something off about Julius though,  and we soon find out that he is stealing life from the Elves to fulfill his need for greed.

The plot unfolds,  the action intensifies,  and we are surprised by many of the outcomes that play out.  Though this story started off just a smidgen slow,  once the action picks up there is no putting this book down until you find out what happens.

What I thought could have been a little more drawn out was how easily the girls accepted the fact that this trio were in fact Elves.  I thought they took that bit of information a little too lightly,  but it didn't really matter once the story picked up.

Scott did a great job creating a fantasy world unlike no other,  putting her own twist on things making it her own.  The end was a huge surprise,  and one you would not expect and I'm anxious for the next book in this trilogy.

BLB Bling Blitz - At The Round Table with Marsha Canham

Marsha Canham

Welcome to the Round Table.  May I offer you a beverage before we begin?
Ohh, I would love to try a Zesty Zombie *s*

Here's your drink delivered by our very own Zombie,  Zar :).  Enjoy!

Thank you so much for taking time to chat with me today.  It's so nice to have you at the Round Table.

It’s wonderful to be here *looking around and sipping my drink*  Thank you for having me.

BK:  Please tell us a bit about yourself....
I live in Canada, in a small town north of Toronto, Ontario.  I was happily married up until last year, but that story would require two more Zesty Zombies LOL.  I have one son, and three wonderful grandchildren.  I have been published since 1984, but actually writing for much longer, having started when my son entered kindergarten.  I wanted to be a stay at home mom, but we weren’t exactly in  financial nirvana, so I had to find something that might contribute to the household income.

BK:  What inspired you to pen this novel?
My editor at the time suggested I write a Regency novel…which made my hair stand on end.  But then I found an obscure mention in article on Napoleon which mentioned an aborted attempt to change places with his brother and escape prison.  That set all the gears in motion.

BK:  What draws you to write in this genre?
Errol Flynn. *s*  I had the hugest crush on him when I was young.  His movies had me on the edge of my seat and I always envisioned myself as the heroine being rescued at sea, or firing arrows in Sherwood Forest.

 Errol Flynn

BK:  How do you keep your writing different from all the other novels in this genre?
I think I concentrate more on making my books historical adventure romances rather than just historical romances.  There has to be action and the characters have to be in physical jeopardy through much of the book to keep “me” interested in writing their story.

BK:  Who is your favorite character and why?
In Swept Away, I love old Aunt Florence.  She was modelled after my ex husband’s aunt Flo, right down to the feisty sense of humour and the tendancy to whack someone across the shins to get their attention.  She was a lovely lady and I hope I have done her memory proud.

BK:  Which character would you most invite to dinner?
I think I would have loved to invite Napoleon Bonaparte for dinner.  He would be a fascinating guest and I could see myself being genuinely mesmerized by him.

BK:  What is your favorite part about writing?
It used to be watching the FedEx truck pull out of the driveway.  That one sight represented a year’s worth of research, planning, plotting, writing long isolated hours into the night, revising, editing, revising again.

BK:  Did you find any particular challenges during the writing of this novel?
Well…the Regency period is very tricky to write about, full of manners and correctness and …just envision the challenge of writing a Pride and Prejudice.  I had to keep the flavour of the time period, yet keep my own voice and style and inject the twists and turns, the action and adventure my books are known for.

BK:  Are you currently working on any projects?
I am working on the sequel to The Iron Rose, another seafaring pirate adventure, this time featuring the two brothers, Gabriel and Jonas Dante.

BK:  Any advice for new aspiring authors?
Write, write, and keep writing.  With ebooks making such a dramatic surge in recent months, there are a lot of indie authors publishing straight to Amazon or Smashwords, but if a writer doesn’t want to get lost in the herd, she still has to do her homework.  The writing has to be good, the story strong, the characters memorable.  Whether writing romance, horror, fantasy, or science fiction…it’s the words that matter and the pictures they pain in the reader’s mind.

BK:  Where can readers find you?
My website is www.marshacanhamebooks.com
I am on Facebook as well:  http://www.facebook.com/marsha.canham
Twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/marshacanham
And my blog, Caesars Through the Fence http://marshacanham.wordpress.com/

Fun Facts:

BK:  Fantasy or Horror?

BK:  Day or Night?
I am definitely a night person.

BK:  Favorite Drink?

BK:  Favorite Movie?

BK:  What is a must have to write?
I must have a medium point ball point pen and a tablet of lined paper.

BK:  If you could possess a supernatural power,  what would it be and why?
I would love to be able to fly.  Apart from the gliding and soaring, imagine how easy it would be to get from place to place.

BK:  Favorite Book?
Gone With the Wind

BK:  Favorite Author?
Michael Connelly

BK:  Favorite Song?
The Way We Were

BK:  Favorite Saying?
May I make it a favourite quote instead? “I believe everything happens for a reason.  People change so that you can learn to let go.  Things go wrong so that you can appreciate them when they’re right. And sometimes good things fall apart so that better things can fall together.”  Marilyn Monroe.

BK:  What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to know about you?
Probably they would find it hard to believe I’ve never been on a ship, never been to sea, and I tend to get seasick if I stay in a pool too long *s*

BK:  What do you hope readers will most take away from your writing?
A sense of adventure.  I hope they can “see”  the scenes as I try to write them.

BK:  If someone could describe you in one word,  what would it be?

Thank you so much for being at the Round Table today.  It's been such a pleasure chatting with you and I wish you much success in the future.

Thank you so much for having me.

The cover blurb….

Swept Away transports readers to Regency England as a young woman rescues a mysterious man, only to find love, danger, destiny....
"They have to know the truth. Before it is too late." Those were the half-naked stranger's only words before he lost consciousness in the shallow tidal pool. Annaleah Fairchilde, heiress and noblewoman, soon learned the identity of the man she saved: Emory Althorpe, adventurer, accused traitor, and Napoleon's spy. Even as she bound the dangerous scoundrel's wounds, she fell deeper under the spell of a man handsome as the devil, sent to her by fate.
He remembered nothing. Only the need to escape. Emory Althorpe was wanted for treason, yet his only hope was a shadowy memory hovering just beyond his grasp, and beautiful Anna, who aroused unexpected passions. He had no choice but to abduct her, needing her to gain access to London's ballrooms, where he could prove his innocence. Together they raced into the face of danger, determined to find the key to his past and live--or die--together, as destiny decreed....

Thrilling Thursdays & Twitter Friend Thursday

Thrilling Thursdays is a weekly meme introducing you to a new book cover that caught my eye this week.  I'd love to know which cover you are into.

Abandoned by her wolf shifter father and raised by her human psychic mother, Carmen Mendoza can't deny she's different. She craves things most women shy away from--and she has a trail of shapeshifting ex-boyfriends to prove it.

Working at a clinic for supernatural creatures, she's escaped the notice of her father's legacy-obsessed family. Until they need a pawn in their bid for power. Snared by a vicious spell designed to wake her inner wolf, Carmen's only hope is to trust the one man strong enough to soothe her darkest instincts.

Alec Jacobson was once the heir apparent to the wolves' ruling elite, until he walked away to marry the woman he loved. She paid with her life. He lives as a rebel, a black-sheep alpha who protects the supernatural residents of New Orleans from the wolves' barbaric class system. Too bad he can't protect himself from his need for Carmen.

Yet staking his claim on his enemy's niece will turn his city into a battleground. Unless he can find a way to stop breaking the rules--and start making them.

Warning: This book contains a renegade alpha wolf, a smart empathic doctor, very dirty sex with psychic safe-words, the occasional dominance game in and out of the bedroom, and a group of supernatural citizens ready to take on the corrupt leaders of their world.

Is that cover not gorgeous?  You should see the rest of them in the series too!  Phenomenal!  So can't wait to read them.

"I See Dead People" with LA Burton

I didn’t know until recently after talking to one of my best friends who is a psychic, she told me what I actually was, a ghost magnet. As far back as I can remember I could sense or see ghosts. The very first time I sensed a ghost I was two. The ghost just so happened to push me down the stairs. I didn’t get hurt but I do remember it.
When I became a teenager I started to see this figure outlined in gold. The first time I saw it I was standing next to my mom’s kitchen stove. As I got older the gold figure never left. I would see it in different rooms. The next type of ghost I saw was what is called shadow people.
Totally different are the shadow people to the gold figure. I have always felt negativity from the shadow people. I started seeing ghosts and found out that it wasn’t what most people called normal. I even went through period when it freaked me out. Most of that was due to my family, which I no longer have any contact with.
Today I embrace my ability to see ghosts but it also goes along with my being a witch. The most recent ghost sighting that totally freaked me out was seeing a ghost in the church next door. It was a gentleman that looked as solid as I was but he was pale. For about month I could see a him in the window staring at me. It was a little unnerving but then one day he was gone.
Wickedly yours,
L. A.

LA wasn’t your normal child. She's dreamed of vampires and werewolves ever since she was a little girl. The only weird thing is - they didn’t scare her. Her looks were deceiving. People think she's nice and unassuming, but underneath she was always dark and twisted, with pink around the edges. Nothing has changed...

All grown up now, L.A. can be found researching and writing her novels. In her spare time she's writing spells, reading tarot cards, and practicing witchcraft. L.A. lives in Ohio with her family, cat (Crysie), the ghost of her late cat (Cougar) and a Jack Russell Terrier (Piper), which keeps her busy.

Logan Wolf is a ghost-hunting witch who helps Little Rock's Special Unit on supernatural and occult crimes. When she's called in to investigate a scene that seems strangely familiar, she finds herself in a race against time to capture a killer with paranormal power and evil origins.

To make matters worse, Logan and her friends are battling Palmira, an insane werefox queen who's taking advantage of the murders to further her own plans for power. When Logan's twin brother is pulled into the fight with Palmira, Logan must unleash the full force of her unruly magick to save him, and all of Little Rock. Even if it means incurring the wrath of the feared Elders' Council along the way...

Thank you so much for sharing this with us today L.A.  My first thought was from the movie,  6th Sense,  hence the title of this post :).  Having this capability can be unnerving and especially at such a young age.   I am looking forward to reading your book and wish you much success in the future.

BLB Ebook Tours - Untamable by Becca Dale Review & Giveaway

I'm happy to have Becca Dale with me today.  She is on Ebook Tour with Book Lovin' Bitches with her title,  Untamable.  I had the pleasure of reviewing this and Becca was kind enough to offer a giveaway!  Thank you Becca and welcome to Immortality and Beyond.

From Amazon -Eight years ago Lily Swanson left Havashaw County with a broken heart. Now circumstances have brought her back to the cowboy who still drives her crazy. Seeing him again stirs erotic memories, but the pain of his betrayal refuses to be soothed with a sexy smile.

Lily left him. That inescapable fact drives Thor Hanson to succeed more than any other. Her return to Havashaw triggers anger, lust and regret, but when she reveals the truth behind her leaving, he's determined to rein her in and show her that what they have is more than a memory.

Neither can deny their passion, as untamable as the broncs Thor trains. But will it be enough, and can Thor convince Lily she's right where she belongs?

My Review:

Untamable by Becca Dale was exquisite.  I don't know if I just didn't look at this book close enough,  read the synopsis right or what but this was definitely not what I expected, and just look at that cover.  I loved it!

Lily hadn't been home in eight years.  The day Thor told her to leave was the day she left everything behind.  Now the time has come that she must return home to see her good friend Mara, who happens to be Thor's sister.

Knowing sooner or later she will have to come face to face with Thor,  she wasn't exactly prepared for it.  He could still make the fire burn despite how much he broke her heart.

When Thor tells her he's going to be riding Lightning,  the  very horse that put him in the hospital and caused her to leave her life,  Lily realizes he still takes too many risks and tells him she won't be watching him try to kill himself.  Furious at his arrogance,  she storms off.

Now,  during those dreadful eight seconds,  she can't turn away.  Thor makes his ride and a rush of relief floods Lily,  he wasn't hurt.  In search of a breather,  she heads to the barn.

An old wound flared,  Thor finds Lily in the stables,  dropping from the pain in his knee.  "Kiss me."  Thor demands needing to get his mind off the pain or pass out.  Lily gives in and passions re-ignite.  Realizing the love is still strong,  Thor refuses to let Lily leave him again.  Will he be able to convince her to stay?

I loved this short by Becca Dale.  I wasn't expecting the steamy sex scenes which was an added bonus for me.  I loved these characters and the relationship between Thor and Lily was well developed and fantastically played out.  The only thing I wanted was more.  I think this story would make for a great novel and I do hope to see more of Lily and Thor,  even some of their back story could be a book of its own.

Becca Dale has such a wonderful style of writing I can't wait to read more from her.

(My new rating system - Isn't it pretty?)
Becca answers a few questions yay!

When did you first consider yourself a writer?  I started spinning romance and horror stories with my friends as stars somewhere around fifth grade and continued from there. I was twelve or thirteen when I became conscious that my friends looked to me to entertain them at slumber parties and campouts, but did not really consider myself a professional writer until I got my first cover in my mailbox.
What inspired Untamable?  I suppose I should tell you the impetus came from somewhere in my head, but in reality, I was walking across the local campus one day and saw a few young cowboys on their way to the barns. They were just so dang arrogant and cute and so very male. LOL Despite that somewhat cougarish start, Thor is based on the country men in my life who struggle to share their feelings. He might be a bit tougher on the outside, but he is the same sweet softie underneath it all. No matter how angry or defensive he gets, he would never raise a hand to a woman and would protect friends and family with his life.
Will we ever be seeing more of Lily and Thor? Since I adore his parents, I have played with the idea of writing about Thor's sister, but I have at least two others in line ahead of her so it might be a while.
What can readers expect in the pages regardless of the cover? Thor and Lily's story started when they were young and stupid. Although it is a tale of a true cowboy and the woman who loves him, the focus is more on growing up and the pain of misunderstanding as well as the importance of listening beyond words spoken. Thor’s pride and Lily’s tender feelings throw up obstacles neither of them knows quite how to overcome.

Today Becca is giving away a choice for one of the following ebooks to one lucky winner!  This giveaway will run until March 24.  Winner will be drawn using Random.org announced on March 25.  So what are the books you can win you ask?  Check these out....

Experience has taught forty-year-old Jessica Summers how to manage and diffuse even the toughest situation, but when she’s assigned to protect a multi-millionaire game designer everything changes. The hot, young entrepreneur with sex on his mind becomes the one thing Jess can’t control. Damned irritating brat.

Petite and sassy, Jess teases Sean McCloud’s sense of humor and ignites emotions he’s repressed for too long. He doesn’t see the twelve year age difference as an issue. His heart and body want her plain and simple. Sean just has to get past her hang ups, survive a pirate attack at sea, and convince his sexy bodyguard to surrender. What could be easier?

Single mother Jenica Anderson keeps small town boys at bay and happy without effort but has no clue how to handle a blue-eyed stranger with a wolfish stare and sensual demands that break all her rules. She only knows that for at least one night, she’ll beg him for exactly what she wants for Christmas.

When a snow storm diverts his plane, Burk Teal lands in Keaton, ND and in the arms of a gorgeous redhead who offers him a glimpse of what home and hearth are all about. As she writhes beneath his hands, he finds precisely what he has been looking for in Santa’s frozen backyard.

Sparks fly immediately between these two, but can physical attraction survive harsh reality or will memories of hot sex and the sound of jingle bells fade to nothing more than a decadent episode that happened one Christmas?

Ex-marine, Marcus Braddock’s protective instincts are stirred by Darcy Ferguson’s generous nature, but her luscious curves arouse an altogether different response. Capturing her for his own quickly becomes a primary objective, but before he can claim his prize, he must liberate the enticing beauty imprisoned behind a wall of insecurities.

Darcy is surrounded by physical perfection—the American standard versus the American ideal. When the ruggedly tempting Marcus Braddock breaches her defenses in a blatant frontal assault, she has no clue how to resist. Yielding could make her the butt of a practical joke, but his sensual blue eyes and tantalizing muscles promise such deliciously sweet surrender.

Before Marc, Darcy understood how the world worked, had been told repeatedly, “Fat girls do not eat sweets in public, do not flaunt their oversized breasts, and certainly do not attract gorgeous men.” Fortunately, no one ever explained the rules to Marc.

Since the last of the great wars, nuclear fallout and global warming have bred fear and suspicion among earth's inhabitants, but they have also bred a new kind of human, which has the rest of the species terrified of annihilation. Prejudice, fear, and hatred have ruled Adarkan's entire life. They are the reason for her birth, and overcoming them is her destiny. She does not have time for love or lust, but when her father's arrogant Beta opens the door to passion, he teaches her the value of a stolen moment and destroys her objectivity. How can she convince both talon and humans to see her as a neutral party in the battle for peace when her body, mind, and heart cry for her talon mate?
As a warrior, Gralak understands the importance of duty and dedication to a cause. As second in command, he trains soldiers to focus on their obligations above all else. These rules guide his life until he meets a lone female who teases his mind and body and makes him questions his dedication to anything except her. Can he protect his love from physical danger and a life of loneliness, or will his own aspirations to become Alpha damn him to an equally cheerless fate?

Trea Daniels rules her professional and personal lives with iron shackles. When it comes to sex, she never mixes business and pleasure, and she always calls the shots. Trea believes power offers security in a male dominated world. However, when her new boss, Jason Green, steps into the picture, he refuses to follow her rules. He plays the game long enough to weaken her defenses, then steals control and demands equality. Jason’s unwavering strength makes Trea confront her own weaknesses and helps her destroy the walls she has so carefully built around her heart.

Nine months after her husband's death, Crystal continues to struggle with his loss though she longs to move on. When she retreats to her grandmother's cabin in Sweden, she hopes to find peace and a bit of herself in the folklore and quiet of her childhood memories. Instead, a gorgeous stranger appears on her doorstep and sends her spinning with his sensual presence.
Too overwhelming to be real and too real to be the mystic being her grandmother claims him to be, Von arouses and confuses Crystal beyond rational thought. In doing so, he releases her from the sexually repressive cage Mark had built around her and frees a spirited woman too long restrained by the expectations of another. When Von and Crystal come together, the searing heat melts Crystal's heart and reservations in a blazing maelstrom of passion that promises a future worthy of the mountain angel that draws them together.

I know!  It's a great choice of books and I can't wait to read them all!   All you have to do is leave a comment with your email address with an answer to this question - What do you love about cowboys?

My answer - They are just so sexy and darn cute in their tight jeans.  Mmm.  I love me a cowboy!
