BBT Guest Post & #Giveaway with Robyn Bachar - Fire in the Blood

Okay, so when I first saw this cover, it was a no-brainer for me that I just HAD to have this author on as a guest. Isn't that cover just beautiful? I'm pleased to introduce you to author, Robyn Bachar, on tour with her book, Fire in the Blood at Bewitching Book Tours. Robyn is sharing a guest post today and a chance for you to win a $50 Gift Card. I hope you enjoy it.

Welcome Robyn!!

By Another Other Name
No matter what you call them, vampires will always suck. Blood, that is. Whether you paint them purple and say they’re invaders from Mars, it’s expected that at some point during a story, a vampire’s going to need to feed, because that’s what vampires do. It’s tradition.
Paranormal romance has been going strong for years, and readers have seen a variety of supernatural creatures populating the paranormal landscape. As an author I’ve watched debates about what the next big thing is. (Zombies! No, demons! Zombie demons!) I’ve heard the fears that vampires are on their way out. Or werewolves. Or that paranormal itself as a genre is over, because it’s all been done before. No matter how much you try to reinvent them, a vampire by any other name is still a blood drinker.
And there’s nothing wrong with that. I write paranormal stories because I love the paranormal. Always have, always will. I put my own spin on the supernatural creatures in my series, the Bad Witch books, but I don’t want to reinvent the wheel. I want my characters to honor the myths and legends that they were inspired by, and to have those traditions enhance the world I’m building and the story that I’m telling. I think that readers will continue to enjoy paranormal romance, because the strange, shivery things-that-go-bump-in-the-night have always fascinated us. The trick is to use that fascination and weave it into a rich story with memorable characters.
The heroine of Fire in the Blood, Patience Roberts, is tough and opinionated—a self-professed “cast iron bitch.” But she’s also soft and squishy on the inside, and she’s desperately in love with a man she can’t have. She’s a demon summoner, and he’s an outcast faerie. Fire in the Blood has action, romance, good versus evil—all the things I love in a story. Because no matter what flavor of paranormal populates a novel, it all comes down to the story.

Bewitching Book Tours: Once Upon A Twisted Time Guest Post

Today we get lucky to have one of the authors from Once Upon A Twisted Dream sharing a guest post during the virtual book tour at Bewitching Book Tours. Which author you say? Please welcome Trish M. Dawson!

Welcome to Immortality and Beyond Trish! Thank you so much for sharing with us today. I hand my readers over to you...

"Hardest part of writing an anthology"-Trish Marie Dawson
When you think about an anthology and what it means - a collection of stories - you might think this is an easy endeavor to be a part with a group of writers, since you are only responsible for one part of the story. And in some ways, being included in Once Upon A Twisted Time was easy. The friendship between myself and the other writers was already there. And we knew each other's work well. Since I was embarking on a journey with three other talented and amazing writers, how could that be tough?
What I didn't initially realize is anthologies aren't just fun, they can be intimidating for a new writer. I remember starting my story, having nothing but excitement for the idea that would become the Once Upon A Twisted Time Anthology but somewhere during my writing adventure I realized my work was going to be in a book…right next to the work of three other writers. I had an 'Oh my God, what if my story totally sucks' moment - more than once. It's one thing for your work to be compared to a different book altogether or even to your own previous works, but when you throw a handful of separate writers into the same mix, it can be exciting and yes - also intimidating.
To be honest, I worried that my story wouldn't hold up to the others and it scared me a teeny bit at first. But then I realized that all the stories would be very different and would appeal to all kinds of readers, which was the point of mixing up the anthology with four writers. Four different stories with four different storytellers - can't go wrong there, right? We all have a different style of writing, and a different way of telling stories and I love it! If they all sounded the same, what fun would that be for the reader?
So yes, I have no problem at all admitting that I spent a few minutes worrying about how my work would be accepted compared to the work of the other contributors in the anthology, but I have no fear now. It's not about one story, it's about the whole. The completed project is amazing. The worlds that Miranda Stork, Tara S. Wood and Lindsay Avalon have created are gorgeous, unique and inspiring! Even though our pieces all fit nicely into the same collection, it's almost as if each is from a different realm. There is no way to compare one to the other, except to say 'That one is JUST as great as the other's!'
So rather than feel intimidated or worried that my story wouldn't jive with the rest, I ended up feeling blessed to be included, and honored to be a part of this amazing anthology. I hope to be able to do more work like this in the future with these same writers, as well as some other writer friends. I cherish the entire experience, totes!
Once Upon A Twisted Time
An Anthology of Dark Adult Fairytales

Date of Publication: 31st October 2012

Number of pages: 250
Word Count: 76,000

Cover Artist: Miranda Stork

Book Description:

Think you know your fairytales? Think again. These aren’t your normal happily-ever-after. Within these pages, a murderous Little Mermaid gets her revenge, the Cinderella doesn’t really want to wear the slipper, Snow White is up to her eyes in industrial experiments, and the Beauty is in fact the Beast.

This collection of four novellas will surprise you, make you gasp in horror, sigh with relief, and sit on the edge of your seat. And most of all…they will make you rethink everything you think you know about dark fairytales…

Song of the Abyss-Lindsay Avalon

Princess Nerissa had envisioned a perfect wedding to a handsome prince. Instead, she fell into a nightmare. When her new husband tries to murder her just hours after pledging his life to her, she must flee towards the sea. Caught in transition from woman to selkie, she is trapped by the dark waters she hoped would be her salvation. Now her destiny becomes that of luring young men to their death…until one comes along that reignites the spark of love inside her. However to ensure her future, she must first face her past. Revenge must be taken…for both her life, and the life of the young man she now loves.

Miss Cavendish and the Spark of Salvation-Tara Stogner Wood
In a city toiling under the iron fist of the Spiegel Syndicate and its monopoly on coal, Miss Georgina "George" Cavendish is on the brink of a breakthrough that could change the world forever. There's just one thing standing in her way, her aunt - Xenobia Cavendish. Threatened by her efforts, the Syndicate procures the services of a notorious assassin with a past tied to her own, known as The Huntsman, to dispatch the brilliant scientist. But once he gets a glimpse of the headstrong beauty, will he be able to do the job, or will Georgina sway him to The Cause? And will George find the breakthrough she needs in time, or is New London Town doomed to forever lie under the dark shadow of her aunt's factories?

Hawke and the Beast-Trish Marie Dawson

Some curses last forever, and some can be broken with the whisper of three little words. Isabella Rose Woodward fell in love with a witch's son over a century ago. Her punishment for breaking the young man's heart was a beastly one. Every month she turns into a different creature, aging on the full moon when her curse allows for a brief return to her human form. Her only salvation is to find a man that will love her as she is…be it adorned in feathers, fur or scales. Has she found this love with the handsome Jasper Hawke? Or will a mysteriously determined Hunter find her first, and snuff out the life she so desperately seeks? A life of normalcy, where she loves and is loved in return… just as she is.

Reborn City-Miranda Stork

Nyx has one mission in life; bring down the brainwashing of New Omsk’s citizens, and release them from their mundane lives of toil. The year is 2355, and the world is a new place. A Governor is in charge of every city in the world, and humanity is attempting to rebuild itself after recovering from a war that nearly killed it. But this Governor has set his eyes on the intrepid little hacker, Nyx, and he will stop at nothing to get her. But perhaps he needs her more than he ever dreamed he would…as do his citizens.

Trish Marie Dawson-

I was born and mostly raised in San Diego, California where I live now with my  family and pets. I’ve been writing short stories and poetry since high school after an obsession with Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’. After over fifteen years of crazy dreams and an overactive imagination, I began my first book ‘I Hope You Find Me’ in December of 2011. When I’m not writing, I am homeschooling my amazing daughter and mildly autistic son, reading whatever I can get my hands on, or enjoying the Southern California sun. As a strict Vegetarian, I hold a special place in my heart for animal rights and dash into the backyard weekly to rescue lizards and mice from our mini-lab/aussie shepherd/cocker spaniel mixed dog, Zoey…who is always getting into some sort of trouble.

Tara Stogner Wood-

Tara Wood divides her time between creating domestic bliss and creating hot paranormal romance with the occasional side of kink. When not playing June Cleaver for her hubby and daughter, she can be found at the local Starbucks slamming back Frappuccinos and plotting out her next idea. Or she’s watching the BBC. Tara resides with her wonderful and tolerant family in the suburbs of Houston, Texas. She is currently at work on several projects, one of them being the next book in her In Blood series.

Lindsay Avalon-

I am a wife, a mother to an adorable mini schnauzer, a programmer, and now an author. I love reading romance because no matter what may be happening in my life, I can always count on my books to end happily ever after. My sister drilled into me an appreciation for fantasy and mythology, something I try to bring to my books. After hearing me complain a few too many times that I had “nothing” to read despite the hundreds of paperbacks scattered around the house, my husband began suggesting I write my own stories. When I finally took his advice I discovered that although I enjoy my day job as a software engineer, my true calling is to be an author.

Miranda Stork-

I was born in Guisborough, North Yorkshire in 1987 and have lived in various places around Britain, including Newcastle and Glasgow.
My writing is inspired by various writers, including the vivid characters of Charles Dickens, the imagination of Stephen King, and the gothic imagery of Anne Rice.

My love of horror began at an early age, when I was only three or four. I could read proficiently at the age of three, and devoured fairy-stories, but I always had a bent towards the darker stories, such as the Brother's Grimm's tales...Red Riding Hood was always a firm favourite, although I always felt sorry for the wolf, despite him having tried to eat everyone!

BBT Virtual Book Tour: Guest Post with Maralee Lowder - The Morticians Wife

Please welcome Maralee Lowder, (I just LOVE her name), visiting during her tour at Bewitching Book Tours with her book, The Morticians Wife! I KNOW! Awesome title and cover!

Welcome Maralee!

Maralee Lowder

Author of

The Mortician’s Wife

One of the biggest problems I faced while writing The Mortician’s Wife was figuring out how to create a character evil enough to make an otherwise timid woman want to murder him without him turning into some sort of comic villain.  Horace, my ultimate “bad guy”, had to be someone most people would admire if he were to get away with the crimes he committed.  In fact, he had to be more than likeable. He had to be downright admirable.

While casting about in my brain for an inspiration for Horace, I came up with the perfect answer.  I would model him after my brother-in-law, the man our family called our very own “action hero.”  James (I’ve changed his name here because, although he knows about his role in the writing of my book, he would still be embarrassed if I made a big deal about it), was, and still is, a true hero.  He’s saved more lives than he can remember. He is the type of man who makes friends everywhere he goes.  He is kind, considerate and loving.  Those attributes were exactly what made him the perfect model for my villain.

If a villain readily shows how evil he is, he may be scary, but not nearly as scary as the guy who appears to be kind and gentle, while hiding his vile impulses. I used James’ most-loved-guy-in-town personality to offset the black soul that lurked just under Horace’s outside appearance.  It was this likable side of Horace that everyone in town loved and respected.  And it was that side of his personality that won an innocent young woman’s heart.  And it was also that side of his personality which allowed him to do things too evil to comprehend, yet never worry about being discovered.

Given her dilemma, what was his young wife to do?  When she discovered the true character of the man she had married, she knew that his taunts were all too real—no one in town would ever believe her when she told the authorities what he had done and what he was fully capable of doing again.

In the end, she did what she knew she must.  But there was one thing she was not prepared for.  Although she was able to eliminate Horace from this earthly world, there was no way she was able to eliminate the horror of his haunting soul.

About the Author:

Maralee Lowder found so much pleasure in reading such a wide spectrum of romance genres, she has never been able to write in just one.  Her novels run the gamut of contemporary, historical, humorous, horror, paranormal and suspense.

Look for the sequel to "The Morticians Wife"  coming soon

Genre: Paranormal Romance

ISBN: 13: 978-1480011229
ASIN:  B009KDVFEI

Number of pages:194
Word Count: 71000

Book Description:
“I have spent the night in supposedly some of the most haunted buildings in America. I have met people who could fairly be described as evil incarnate. I have been to the Old Mortuary in Dunsmuir. It is gorgeous but I wouldn't spend a single night there.” Kathleen McKenna, author of horror novels 'The Wedding Gift' and 'Family Matters'.

Five miles from the new age Mt. Shasta City, the sleepy Northern California town of Dunsmuir plays host to a nightmarish house – the Old Mortuary – where the mortician's wife spent four decades alone, and some say insane, sleeping in an alcove off one bedroom where she believed the evil spirits of the house could not get to her, harboring terrible secrets.

With the steady flow of dead bodies through the basement and the murderous events upstairs, this is the story of how the Old Mortuary of Dunsmuir became one of the most haunted houses in America as a result of the personality and misdeeds of one man, Horace Carpenter, whose eternal soul most certainly does not rest in peace, as many will attest, and probably never will.

BBT Virtual Book Tour Interview & #Give@way: Moonlight & Mechanicals by Cindy Spencer Pape

Welcome to Immortality and Beyond. May I offer you a drink?
·
I think I’ll go with Witches Brew. Thanks! I’m delighted to be here today.

Wonderful. Now that we're all settled in Cindy, I'm so excited to chat with you today. I love the covers on your books and can't wait to start reading them. For you guys, Cindy is offering you a chance to win your choice for Book 1 Steam & Sorcery or Moonlight & Mechanicals in pdf or epub formats. Leave a comment with your email telling Cindy what is that draws you to want to read her books.

BK:  When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
CSP: It was a gradual thing for me. I’d noodled around with it my whole life but didn’t really give it a serious shot until my mid-30s.

BK:  Please tell us a little bit about your current release...
CSP: Moonlight & Mechanicals is the fourth story (second full-length book) in the Gaslight Chronicles series from Carina Press. It features Wink, a street kid adopted into the nobility, now all grown up and a brilliant engineer. She has to choose between a Knight of the Round Table (in this world, they still exist, the descendants of the originals.) who adores her and the taciturn werewolf, Inspector Liam McCullough, who she has loved since she was sixteen. Of course they also have to save England while they’re at it.

BK:  What inspired this particular novel/book?
CSP: When I decided to try writing a steampunk romance, Wink and Liam were the first characters to form in my mind. As they evolved, though, I realized the story started much earlier, with Wink’s adoptive parents. (Steam & Sorcery, book 1 of this series.) Wink and Liam were put on hold for a while, but now it was their turn.

BK:  How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?
CSP: I like to think I have my own voice. In this genre, a lot is about the world. Mine mixes magic and paranormal with the futuristic technology that often goes with steampunk, and I think I’ve built memorable characters who can stand on their own.

BK:  What was the hardest thing about writing this story?
CSP: Keeping Wink and Liam apart long enough to make it a story. They’d both been in love with each other for years.

BK:  Which character was your favorite to write for in this story? Why?
CSP: I’m particularly fond of George the clockwork mastiff. He can do things that even Wink, who built him, can’t quite explain. He’s made of brass and nuts and bolts, but there’s something very real about George.

BK:  Tell us about the one scene you had the most fun writing…
CSP: It was actually three scenes. One by one, each of Wink’s younger brothers corners Liam and asks about his intentions. Since they’re family friends, much younger than he, and Liam really doesn’t plan to marry Wink (at this point in the story, anyway) it’s awkwardly uncomfortable.

BK:  Will this become a series? If so, what inspired it to be a series? OR If it is a series, what inspired it to become a series?
CSP: LOL, I think I answered that above. Plus, once I dove into this world, it was too much fun to let it go with just one book.

BK:  Now for a little fun, and into your everyday life, What is a day in your life like?
CSP: Pretty unexciting. I’m the servant for two dogs. I get up, I write, interspersed by letting them in and out. I have two college-aged children who may be playing x-Box while I’m trying to write. (My desk is in the family room.) My husband cooks, we all grumble about cleaning up, and then I either write more or watch TV or read.

BK:  What do you like to do when you're not writing?
CSP:  Like most authors, I read voraciously. I’m a fan of The Big Bang Theory, Castle, Warehouse 13, Doctor Who and other geek TV. We watch a lot of history, science, and military channels in our household. In the summer, we hang out as much as possible in costume at Renaissance fairs. We’re just starting to get into the steampunk social scene and I’m really enjoying that!

BK:  What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you?
CSP: Unlike a lot of writers, I’m really good at math. I used to tutor high school students and do ACT/SAT prep in any math up to calculus.

BK:  What do you like to read? Who is your favorite author?
CSP: Wow, the list is endless. I love paranormal romance, with Jayne Ann Krentz (under all her names) and Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels as prime examples. Also romantic suspense, some with a touch of paranormal, like Linda Howard and Elizabeth Lowell. I also read some SF and Fantasy, like Jim Butcher, Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett. And historical romance, like Julia Quinn and Stephanie Laurens.

BK:  What is one piece of advice you can give to aspiring writers/authors?
CSP: Be in it for the long haul. Don’t expect it to be easy, but don’t give up when it gets rough.

BK:  What are you currently working on?
CSP: I’m revamping Nailed, a short story I did with Resplendence Publishing into a longer novella, at their request. I think the new one will be out after the first of the year.

BBT Virtual Book Tour: Guest Post by Christine Locke - Open Door

I'm pleased to introduce  you to Christine Locke, on tour at Bewitching Book Tours with her book, Open Door. Christine is sharing a guest post with us today, Welcome Christine. The floor is all yours :)

Who Wants to Live Forever? By Christine Locke

Well, no one, if you believe many popular stories.  Like the contest at the center of Highlander with the prize, life as a mortal, going to its winner, many stories about immortal characters reveal them to be conflicted about their “gift,” eternal life.

“Being sixteen forever sounded good until you really thought about it. Then it didn't seem like such a great prospect.”
― Cassandra Clare, City of Fallen Angels

YA paranormal novels are no exception.  In Time, the sequel to my first published novel Open Door, gives me the opportunity to focus on the question Stephenie Meyer asks:

“If you could live forever, what would you live for?”
― Stephenie Meyer
I get to show—or at least hint at—the afterlife of a main character with In Time, and that is lots of fun.  I try to convey that although her earthly life is over, she still meets challenges and is drawn to opportunities, even if my heroine can no longer understand her mentor as she once did.  I’d like to think that the kind of immortality I’m conveying—a sort of heaven—is free from the biggest problem I’ve observed other immortal fictional characters combating: boredom.  The trials of this life are interesting for a time, but once you’ve learned what you can from them and you know your time has no limits, ennui invariably sets in, or so Lestat told me J

I agree with Baudelaire:

“The insatiable thirst for everything which lies beyond, and which life reveals, is the most living proof of our immortality.” --Charles Baudelaire

Live with an insatiable thirst NOW, revel in all that your life reveals, apply it to the best of your ability, because we do thirst for what lies beyond.  Whatever that is, we do wonder and wait and, perhaps with dread or foreboding (for what could be more natural?), we hope it will be something more, something new, something wonderful.

Just remember this:

“... millions long for immortality who don't know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon.”
― Susan Ertz

Here’s to savoring your Sundays while reading fabulous fiction for as long as we may!  I hope you give Open Door a try, I hope you love it, and I thank you for visiting Immortality and Beyond.

Virtual Book Tour & #Giveaway with Alan S. Kessler - Satan Carol

Today I am excited to introduce you to Alan Kessler, on tour now with his book Satan Carol at Goddess Fish Promotions! Alan is offering you a chance for 2 of you to win a copy of his book in your choice for print or e-book, PLUS, by following his tour and commenting, you also will be entered to win a $10 Wild Child Publishing Gift Card AND a pack of Snackwells Devils Food Cookies (Open to US/Canada Only)!

Welcome to Immortality and Beyond Alan!

BK:  Please tell us a little bit about your current release...

Satan has a son who needs a soul. A Satan Carol is a story about how the devil, constrained by the cosmic law of freewill, tries to influence a young girl and her family into giving her child’s soul to him.

BK:  What inspired this particular novel/book?

I wanted to write a story about faith and choices while using as its central character the devil, portraying him beyond caricature as someone with motivations we can understand. He is not the enemy of God but a fallen angel who feeling abandoned by his Father has a plan to regain His  love. Of course, since we are talking about Satan here, the plan is demonic.

BK:  When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I wrote my first story when I was ll. It was about the earth opening up and exploding with crawling creatures called Leeks.

BK:  How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?

I think spiritual horror is different by definition. I use blood but at the end of the story I want the horror to transcend the visceral and give the reader something to think about beyond the gore.

BK:  What was the hardest thing about writing this story?

My habit of self-editing as I write. I want every sentence perfect, every word to fit not only with what I want to say but have a rhythm. Prose should be musical, that often means not using the same adjective, verb, or noun in the same paragraph or sometimes, same page. Pretty crazy, I admit.

BK:  What character was your favorite to write for in this story? Why?

I liked having Satan expound upon why he thinks he got the short end of the stick.

BK:  Which was your favorite scene to write?

There’s an old farmer from Idaho, Orem, who landing on a beach, in the parallel universe of ShinyLand 7, believes he’s died. Crabs pop up from the sand and crawl over him, their large pincers snapping. He tries to brush the crustaceans away, his hands going through the scaly bodies.

BK:  Will this become a series? If so, what inspired it to be a series?

No. One journey into this kind of hell is enough.

BK:  Now for a little fun, and into your everyday life, What is a day in your life like?

I get up, walk the dog, see the kids off to school, sometimes use the EMF meter I got for my birthday and look for electromagnetic anomalies in our old New England farmhouse.

BK:  What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I teach karate, watch Ohio State football and when I can, the Cleveland Browns. For those of you not familiar with the latter, it is a professional football team and according to a Brown’s website, rebuilding since 1964.

BK:  What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you?

I hate violence
.
BK:  What do you like to read? Who is your favorite author?

I read non-fiction, except for horror writers I like, especially ones belonging to the New England Horror Writers association. I like Dickens and Faulkner. Both believed in ghosts.

BK:  Please tell us one piece of advice you were given as an author that you carry with you when you write?

Don’t let your imagination become a monster devouring the story.

BK:  What is one piece of advice you can give to aspiring writers/authors?

My advice is a clichĂ©—don’t give up; persevere. But here’s something more—write what’s true to your heart and with your own voice. Perhaps that will intersect with what the market wants, but if not, does it matter? The passion to write should be the overriding motivation for why we do it.

BK:  What are you currently working on?

A novel about a boy who grows up in a house of demons and a novella with a serial killer who gets what he deserves.

BK:  Where can readers connect with you?

About Alan:
Born in a small town in Ohio. Married, with four children and a dog, Buckeye. We live in New England.

What does the devil really want?
Nostalgic for the Inquisition and plague, Satan feels neglected by the modern world that no longer blames him for disease and death. He plans to create a new genesis, a place where people will love him. For that, his son needs just the right soul.
And there is one—unique, powerful, able to heal. To get it, Satan has a plan that begins in Ireland in the famine year, 1848, and 180 years later traps a young girl and her family in demonic forces pushing them to kill.
A Satan Carol is a horror story about family values--even if they originate in hell.

Excerpt:

On back of the EnViro truck continuing across the grassless, treeless land, Orem couldn’t tell if the gray, steaming waves he saw lapping sluggishly against a beach were those of a bay or ocean. He could distinguish the two structures whose dark shapes he had seen from a distance, the one closest to him an old farmhouse painted black, beyond it, a ramshackle pier standing a half mile from the shoreline. When the truck passed the pier, Orem saw what looked like a junkyard where the road ended. As the truck slowed before entering the junkyard’s fenced in area, he let go of the handle and jumped, rolling in dirt so dry and light he inhaled it as if it were another form of air. Choking, he took small breaths, sat there slowly adapting to the particle laced, heated atmosphere.
Out of the ground hundreds of small, shriveled crabs, their oversized, razor-sharp claws clicking, swarmed over him. Orem thrashed at them, his hands going through their bodies. Still frantically searching for what had strayed into their feeding zone, the crabs covered Orem’s face, twitched and convulsed in hunger and after running down his legs, disappeared with a popping sound into the dust, the last of their energy wasted on trying to eat a ghost. Orem saw no bite marks on his skin. He got up and by walking slowly, resting every few steps, the heat from the scorching land burning through the soles of his shoes, reached the junkyard fence of dry-rotted planks arranged haphazardly. Orem read a blistered, hand-lettered sign propped up against an old toilet: Moe Gut-man Salvge & antiks
A business sign…in Hell? The EnViro road from Boston to the White Mountains ended on Moe Gutman’s desert land where sinks, stained mattresses, broken pipes and large, cracked vats lay jumbled together along the fence. Through a hole in the boards, Orem watched the truck he’d jumped from pierce the ground with its titanium shaft. Sludge poured from the truck into a bubbling landfill marked Field 17. Nearby, a row of glowing, fissured mounds created by EvViro trucks pumping waste beyond the ground’s capacity to absorb it, rose 70 feet above fields 12 and 9. Brother Green’s business extended all the way to Hell. Orem didn’t understand. For him Hell was a place of torment, not entrepreneurship. In the Hell he imagined, the crabs would have chewed on his face forever. “Am I a spirit and this, damnation? The house and pier, the junkyard, designed to remind me of the world I’ve lost?” Except for the heat, he couldn’t feel or touch what was around him. This Hell of Brother Green’s trucks had its own dynamics and he remained outside it, looking in, detached and alone. “Is this my punishment for sin?  Eternal isolation even from other damned souls in this land of the dead?”
Hello hello. Can you hear me?
Orem blinked and looked over to where a boy sat slumped and drooling in a stroller parked a few yards from the junkyard fence. Behind the child, a young girl, very thin, stood gazing out at the water.
Children? In Hell? To Orem that didn’t make sense. And he was sure the girl had just spoken to him. Is it possible, by some miracle, I’m still alive?
