They eyed each other silently, neither one offering up a word to start the conversation. 

In the quiet between them, Giselle studied the scent. Definitely a perfume: natural oils of patchouli had been mixed with clary sage and just a hint of citronella. It worked well to mask the other synthetic smells of deodorant and floral soap that still clung to her body, but not well enough to trick Giselle’s nose. This woman was no wolf. She was definitely a witch, though. The pendant she wore was enough to give that away, and the Bohemian style clothing with flowing skirts and odd colorful patterns screamed “earth mother.”

The woman closed the distance between them after the silence had long since gone stale. “You do recognize me, don’t you?” There was an oddly hopeful edge in the woman’s voice that caught Giselle off guard. 

Should she recognize her? Sure, they both were redheads. But how many other ginger women in the world were there? That meant nothing. And if she was being truly honest with herself, all the faces of all the foster families that had taken her in and subsequently sent her back into the system had long since blurred together into one wretched image in her mind. If this woman had been a part of the foster system, she was barking up the wrong tree if she thought Giselle would welcome her back into her life with open arms.

“Sorry. No.” Giselle crossed her arms in front of her and stood firmly in place.

“Oh, but how could you?” A tear trickled from the corner of the woman’s eye. “I just thought… You were such a tiny thing the last time I held you in my arms.”

Giselle scoffed silently, remembering all the broken promises and false hope that came with each new family that took her in. “Lots of people held me in their arms… and dropped me just as quickly.”

Her words seemed to cut straight to the woman’s heart. More waterworks had her wiping her cheeks with the billowy sleeve of her shirt. “I know. I wish I could have given you a different life. You were meant for so much better things. But…I… sorry.” She sniffled, taking a few stuttered breaths, and then cleared her throat. “Giselle, I am so very sorry.”

“I never told you my name.” The woman’s tears had tugged at Giselle’s heart, but at the mention of her name, she was back on point. How much did this woman know of who she was? And why?

“I didn’t mean to come off so forward. I have just been searching for you for so long.” The woman reached a hand out as if to welcome her in for a hug, but Giselle took one step backwards, out of her reach.

Giselle opened her mouth to speak, but the words refused to come. The woman had all but admitted to being her mother. She had certainly made a show of emotions. But sad as they were, her sobs failed to stir the same feelings within Giselle. Numbness and confusion had Giselle’s feelings locked tighter than a bank vault. If she was her mother… But that wasn’t possible. She was no wolf.

Now that we are settled in, let's get to know you better.

BK: Looking out the nearest window, describe the scene you see.

LHC: A grey day, a listless, indifferent breeze. Oh, crumbs, the bird feeder’s empty again--I guess “pigs” do fly. A few purple morning glories still cling to the porch railing, but the green beans twined there have gone brown. Across the driveway, half a dozen chickens mill about as if their electric fence was so much air, and they hide their eggs in the brambles.

BK: Tell us about your office. Is it a mess like mine, or is everything in its place?

LHC: Office? It’s so messy, it hasn’t even that much integrity. In the living room is my beach chair, with a cup holder for a coffee thermos or beer bottle. The remains of the mail litter the floor, and my footstool has been hijacked by a grandson. My bedroom has the unfinished 3’ plank across two columns of book boxes for a desk-cum-sewing-table, but the exercise ball I used for a desk chair popped and I haven’t replaced it yet. Still, there are shelves above, where the notebooks, napkins and other scraps associated with my writing are at least together, if not sorted.

BK: What is a must-have, such as coffee or a favorite pen, that you need to write?

LHC: Feet up at least to heart level is preferred, but I’m adaptable.

BK: Do you like to write in silence, or do you need music or background noise?

LHC: It must seem like silence to others, but since I sort of speak my text in my head as I write, it doesn’t seem quiet to me. External sounds neither help nor hinder--so long as it’s not conversation! Conversation hijacks me into participating.

BK: Tell us a bit about your hero/heroine, and their development.

LHC: Callie Walking, a young woman with a knack for magic, makes a living helping people with supernatural issues and still wonders what she wants to be when she grows up. Because magic comes readily to her, she considers herself to be not “really” working, but can’t bring herself to get a “real” job like, say, accountancy or programming.

She helps support a younger brother, crazed in some as-yet-unrevealed magical incident, and her Lakota father who works intermittently as a stage shaman. She is somewhat haunted by Coyote, the Native American trickster.

BK: What is your unique twist that you've brought to your storyline?

LHC: I’m rather a fan of moral ambiguity. I like leaving readers unsure whether an event or a character is “good” or “evil”; even better is leaving them wondering the same about anything, real or fictional. Is it “good” to kill a killer?

BK: As a writer myself, I'm always curious how other writers get through stumble blocks. When you find a story not flowing, or a character trying to fight you, how do you correct it?

LHC: I yield to the character; their story is invariably better than any plan of mine. When a story isn’t flowing, there is some issue or concept I haven’t yet gotten clear on myself; reading nonfiction is my best lubricant. It helps that I have some half a dozen very different stories currently in progress--when stuck on one, switching to another helps. At least, it keeps me from feeling too much like a slacker.

BK: Using the letters of your first name as an acronym, describe your book...

LHC: But that would force me to reveal my first name! I’ll use my preferred nom d’adresse:

yarn (a cheat; there is a dreadful dearth of “y” words!)

BK: How did your writing journey begin?

LHC: When I realized that my daydreams took the form of describing, in words, precisely what I was seeing/doing/experiencing, and that I would go over a scene again and again until I was satisfied with the grace and power of the phrasing--just like in my favorite books--I thought, why not write it down?

BK: Using the letters from the word, Summer, how would friends and family describe you?

LHC:

BK: What is the craziest thing you've ever written about, whether it got published or not?

LHC: A happy hooker, whose “super-power” is the ability to manipulate other people’s sex drive.

BK: Tell us one thing you've done in life, that readers would be most surprised to know.

LHC: Two weeks in Maui in an Anthony Robbins seminar, climbed and jumped from a 50’ pole and did a 30’ firewalk.

BK: What can we expect from you in the future?

LHC: Panic. What if people like my stuff and I can’t write fast enough?

Pure poison, the both of them. Make mine an IPA, Sierra Nevada’s “Torpedo” for current favorite. . . . OK, OK: long ago and far away, in a previous incarnation of great ignorance, I chose Pepsi--but only because I couldn’t get Tab.

I am by preference a creature of the night.

Pen&Paper/laptop or Computer? I have a lovely slim lightweight MacBook, and a spiffy, almost medieval-looking padded bag to carry it in, anywhere. So I carry the carrier (and laptop) in a Girl Genius Jagermonster backpack, because I still have to have my (spiral-bound, college-ruled, multi-tabbed) notebooks. Notebooks don’t quit for lack of battery.

Pizza or Burger?

Salad. With vinaigrette.

Rock or Country?

Classic rock; Celtic; mostly folk. But Country does have the occasional gem, like Billy Currington’s “God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy.”

Chocolate or Vanilla?

What’s vanilla? (If it ain’t chocolate, why eat it?)

Oh.My.God! Okay, let me start off by saying that through the entire book I was literally on the edge of my seat. The prologue opens with action, the first chapter is action, and I think only, maybe, one chapter may have slowed down!

I was chewing my nails as I worked my way through scenes, but in a VERY GOOD WAY! I can't tell you guys enough how much I LOVED this book! I couldn't get enough!

Nina is amazing and one Kick-Ass heroine! I totally loved her and Max, well who wouldn't want a hot, FBI agent knocking on their doorsteps? Whew!

Frankie was nothing short of "I want him for a BFF", oh man do I ever! Think about this...

You're half vampire half human, you can kick ass right along side an old vampire, and people look to you to help save their world! Yeah! That's what you get not to mention Nina rides a freakin' Triumph!

She ROCKS!

If you're looking for a fast paced, can't-put-it-down-until-you've-reached-the-end kind of book, then you are going to want this one in your Kindle, on your shelf, however it is you read! Greco is an amazing writer and I can not wait for the next book!

It's dark. I can see my neighbor's front porch--they have their front night light on. I see trees, cars on the street but they are in shadow. We have few streetlights.

BK: Tell us about your office. Is it a mess like mine, or is everything in its place?

I wish my office was organized. Right now, it's like a tornado passed through.

BK: What is a must-have, such as coffee or a favorite pen, that you need to write?

I was a smoker for a long time, so writing without smoking was really tough at first. Now, I always need something to drink, coffee or tea, or even just water. Sometimes I'll have a beer or glass of wine. But I usually forget it's there. It's like a crutch. I just want it. Just in case!

BK: Do you like to write in silence, or do you need music or background noise?

It really depends. Some days I do better in complete silence, sometimes I like some music. But I don't need either to write. Since I write in weird places at weird times, I am pretty adaptable.

BK: Tell us a bit about your hero/heroine, and their development.

Nina is in her early 30s, half vampire, half human. I wanted her slightly older than the usual urban fantasy heroines. She had a weird, almost sheltered upbringing. She was raised on a secret military base where she trained to be a member of Blood Ops, this wild government organization takes down rogue supernatural creatures. So her world view is a little skewed. She's never really dated, her only friends are supernaturals since she never really spent time in the human world.

BK: As a writer myself, I'm always curious how other writers get through stumble blocks. When you find a story not flowing, or a character trying to fight you, how do you correct it?

I write through it and then go back and edit out the stuff that doesn't work. Sometimes I have to walk away and start the next chapter. Then I can go back to the problem spot with a fresh pair of eyes.

BK: How did your writing journey begin?

I started writing plays in high school and all through college. That's what I thought I Wanted to do with my life. Then reality sunk in--it's near impossible to make a living as a playwright. So I just stopped, and worked in entertainment for 20 years. I wrote on and off but just kind of filed it away, forgot about it. A few years ago, I decide to just go for it.

BK: Using the letters from the word, Summer, how would friends and family describe you?

BK: What is the craziest thing you've ever written about, whether it got published or not?

This is a tough one. I once wrote about someone lighting themselves on fire. I was 10.

BK: Tell us one thing you've done in life, that readers would be most surprised to know.

Another tough one! Maybe that I've worked the red carpet at an Emmy Awards? That was kind of wild. And super stressful.

BK: What can we expect from you in the future?

I am working on the Hell's Belle follow up, as well as a horror novel. I have the idea for a paranormal YA novel as well. Hopefully you'll be seeing a lot more books!
