Interview with Author, Suzanne Johnson - Sentinels of New Orleans Series (Book Tour & Giveaway)

Elysian Fields

Sentinels of New Orleans Series

Book Three
Suzanne Johnson

Welcome to IAB. I'm so glad you could stop in today to chat. May I offer you a beverage?

I’ll have a Magic Margarita, please!

Now that we are settled in, let's get to know you better.

BK: Looking out the nearest window, describe the scene you see.

I see the big curve in the Mississippi River as it winds past the French Quarter in New Orleans, and a big freighter docked on the other side.

BK: Tell us about your office. Is it a mess like mine, or is everything in its place?

OMG. It’s a disaster. I have a little pig trail through the piles of books, papers, art supplies, books, clothes, and books. The worse my deadlines get, the worse my housekeeping. Which isn’t great to begin with.

BK: What is a must-have, such as coffee or a favorite pen, that you need to write?

I need Diet Coke in a bottle, not a can, and (weird, I know), I don’t really want it chilled. Room temperature holds its carbonation better. I pretend I’m being European, but it’s really because it stays carbonated longer.

BK: Do you like to write in silence, or do you need music or background noise?

If I’m revising or copyediting, I like music, but I can’t write to music. If I’m writing, the music’s off. I just don’t hear background noise. I guess it’s from learning to work at a newspaper and write in a newsroom—I can completely block out noises and voices (but not music).

BK: Tell us a bit about your hero/heroine, and their development.

When the series begins (in Royal Street), the heroine, DJ, has led a pretty sheltered life. She’s a Green Congress wizard (ritual magic), but she received her magical training from her mentor so she hasn’t had a lot of real-world experience. She did go to a regular human university (humans don’t know about the other species) so she could learn to mainstream. When Hurricane Katrina hits and New Orleans’ levees fail, she loses most of the people and things she’s used to define herself and her place in the world, so she has to grow up fast. As the series has progressed (through book two, River Road, and book three, Elysian Fields) she’s come to know herself better, to trust her instincts more, and to assert her powers more. That progression will continue as the series goes on.

BK: As a writer myself, I'm always curious how other writers get through stumbling blocks. When you find a story not flowing, or a character trying to fight you, how do you correct it?

I go old-school. I shut down the computer, go off in a quiet corner with a notebook and a pen, and I start sketching out my character’s pros and cons, his flaws and his strengths. I try out different scenarios for the scene that’s giving me trouble and see what works best. Usually, if a character is giving me fits it’s because I haven’t gotten him or her fully developed in my mind or I’m trying to force a scene that isn’t consistent with their personalities. As soon as I’ve given it some serious thought, I go back and force myself to write the scene. I won’t let it fester long. Even if what I write is crappy and I know I’m going to go back and change it, I get it on paper. That keeps a stumbling block from becoming a writing block.

BK: Using the letters of your first name as an acronym, describe your book...

Hahaha. Crap, I would have a name with a freaking Z in it. Can I change my name to Pam? No? Okay, I’ll just cheat.

Sexy pirates
Urban fantasy
Zaftig serial killer
Axe murderer
Nonstop Action
Necromancy
Eek! Elves!

BK: How did your writing journey begin?

With Hurricane Katrina. I was living in New Orleans at the time of the storm and went back for a couple of years of rebuilding before moving away for family reasons. I found myself in a small town where I didn’t know anyone, was horribly homesick for New Orleans, still had some residual PTSD from the storm, and decided to try working it off by writing a book, which became Royal Street. There’s a line toward the end of the book that says something like: “Katrina took, and she gave.” I lost a lot but wouldn’t trade my “new” career writing fiction for anything.

BK: Using the letters from the word, Summer, how would friends and family describe you?

Suzanne understands methodically measuring every ramification….I think that means I’m pretty intense and obsessive about my work, but I’m not sure.

BK: What is the craziest thing you've ever written about, whether it got published or not?

I’ve written some wacky flash fiction shorts in the Sentinels series world. Craziest….Probably the story of the undead pirate Jean Lafitte in a supermarket looking for cat food (he thinks the cat is the food so he goes to the butcher department).

BK: Tell us one thing you've done in life, that readers would be most surprised to know.

I break out in hives when I’m stressed—this only began two or three years ago. I have them now because I have a ridiculously tight deadline coming up.

BK: What can we expect from you in the future?

Writing as Susannah Sandlin, the fourth book in my Penton Legacy, comes out on June 10. The fourth Sentinels book, Pirate’s Alley, is in the revision process and will come out next spring. I hope to have a collection of shorts in the Sentinels world this fall.

This or That...

Coke or Pepsi? Coke

Night Owl or Early Bird? Early bird (who’s only able to find writing time late at night, making me an early-bird-but-reluctant-night-owl).

Fantasy or Mystery? Fantasy

Pen/Paper or Computer? Computer

Pizza or Burger? Burger

Rock or Country? Both

Chocolate or Vanilla? Vanilla

Beach or Mountains? Mountains

Thank you so much for having us as one of your stops today. It has been great getting to know more about you and your book, and hope you will come back when the next release is out (*hinthint*)

Thanks to a tip from the undead pirate Jean Lafitte, DJ Jaco knows the attacks aren't random--an unknown necromancer has resurrected the original Axeman of New Orleans, and his ultimate target is a certain blonde wizard.

Namely, DJ. Fighting off an undead serial killer as troubles pile up around her isn't easy. Jake Warin's loup-garou nature is spiraling downward, enigmatic neighbor Quince Randolph is acting weirder than ever, the Elders are insisting on lessons in elven magic from the world's most annoying wizard, and former partner Alex
Warin just turned up on DJ's to-do list. Not to mention big maneuvers are afoot in the halls of preternatural power.

Suddenly, moving to the Beyond as Jean Lafitte's pirate wench? It could be DJ's best option.

Book Description:

Hurricane Katrina is long gone, but the preternatural storm rages on in New Orleans. New species from the Beyond moved into Louisiana after the hurricane destroyed the borders between worlds, and it falls to wizard sentinel Drusilla Jaco and her partner, Alex Warin, to keep the preternaturals peaceful and the humans unaware. But a war is brewing between two clans of Cajun merpeople in Plaquemines Parish, and down in the swamp, DJ learns, there’s more stirring than angry mermen and the threat of a were-gator.

Wizards are dying, and something—or someone—from the Beyond is poisoning the waters of the mighty Mississippi, threatening the humans who live and work along the river. DJ and Alex must figure out what unearthly source is contaminating the water and who—or what—is killing the wizards. Is it a malcontented merman, the naughty nymph, or some other critter altogether? After all, DJ’s undead suitor, the pirate Jean Lafitte, knows his way around a body or two.

It’s anything but smooth sailing on the bayou as the Sentinels of New Orleans series continues.

Book Description:

As the junior wizard sentinel for New Orleans, Drusilla Jaco's job involves a lot more potion-mixing and pixie-retrieval than sniffing out supernatural bad guys like rogue vampires and lethal were-creatures. DJ's boss and mentor, Gerald St. Simon, is the wizard tasked with protecting the city from anyone or anything that might slip over from the preternatural beyond.

Then Hurricane Katrina hammers New Orleans' fragile levees, unleashing more than just dangerous flood waters. While winds howled and Lake Pontchartrain surged, the borders between the modern city and the Otherworld crumbled. Now the undead and the restless are roaming the Big Easy, and a serial killer with ties to voodoo is murdering soldiers sent to help the city recover.

To make it worse, Gerald St. Simon has gone missing, the wizards' Elders have assigned a grenade-toting assassin as DJ's new partner, and undead pirate Jean Lafitte wants to make her walk his plank. The search for Gerry and the killer turns personal when DJ learns the hard way that loyalty requires sacrifice, allies come from the unlikeliest places, and duty mixed with love creates one bitter roux.

About the Author:

On Aug. 28, 2005, Suzanne Johnson loaded two dogs, a cat, a friend, and her mom into a car and fled New Orleans in the hours before Hurricane Katrina made landfall.

Four years later, she began weaving her experiences and love for her city into the Sentinels of New Orleans urban fantasy series, beginning with Royal Street (2012), continuing with River Road (2012), and now with Elysian Fields (August 2013).

She grew up in rural Alabama, halfway between the Bear Bryant Museum and Elvis’ birthplace, and lived in New Orleans for fifteen years—which means she has a highly refined sense of the absurd and an ingrained love of SEC football and fried gator on a stick.

As Susannah Sandlin, she writes the best-selling Penton Vampire Legacy paranormal romance series and the recent standalone, Storm Force.

Book Tour & Giveaway: Dysus Dreamer by JA Garland

BK: Looking out the nearest window, describe the scene you see.

JA: As far as the eye can see, lush, green mountains surround me. Over a cup of steaming coffee, the view makes me smile in anticipation of a trail run.

BK: Tell us about your office. Is it a mess like mine, or is everything in its place?

JA: My writing space is tidy, but I wouldn't call it entirely organized. I have a small desk that fits in my small bedroom. On the desk are two printers, one color, and one black and white powerhouse. (Sentences read differently when they are printed, did you ever notice that? So I like to print them out to make sure it reads exactly how I intended). I also have a little divider/holder where I keep my hard-copy working manuscripts. Sometimes it gets so full it tips over, lol.

BK: What is a must-have, such as coffee or a favorite pen that you need to write?

JA: Pajamas. I do my best work when I am wearing a pair of super comfy pajamas.

BK: Do you like to write in silence, or do you need music or background noise?

JA: My writing area must be as quiet as possible. I used to listen to music when I wrote, and then I realized the emotion of the songs carried into my writing. Which can be a good and bad thing…maybe you didn't want flowery and lovey when you were constructing that fight scene?

BK: Tell us a bit about your hero/heroine, and their development.

JA: To effectively tangle with the bad guys, Slade needed to have some ‘bad’ in him. His mottos are things like, “One is none, and two is one.” Which refers to weapons, and his inability to trust that one won’t malfunction and let him down. That’s also his outlook on people… Needless to say, he’s well prepared and trained for any situation.

BK: As a writer myself, I'm always curious how other writers get through stumble blocks. When you find a story not flowing, or a character trying to fight you, how do you correct it?

JA: I go for a run. Funny how five miles of hitting the trails can help you work through any sticky parts. It also helps the run fly by!

BK: Using the letters of your first name as an acronym, describe your book...

JA: J – Jam packed with twists and turns, A – action abounds!

BK: How did your writing journey begin?

JA: Well, originally I wanted to be a jet fighter pilot, of course. Okay, so that was just a phase...following the movie Top Gun. Seriously, I’ve wanted to be a writer from childhood, but as life has a way of doing, it moved me in a different direction. Becoming and being a firefighter is full of rewards. I love serving the public. But writing is a release--an addictive freedom. I am very lucky to enjoy two such different, and spectacular careers in one lifetime.

BK: Using the letters from the word, Summer, how would friends and family describe you?

JA: S – Spectacular U – Unmelodic (I can’t sing to save my life) M – Moony (I’m a dreamer) M – Motivated E – Energetic R – Rainfall (There’s just something about a good, hard rain)

BK: What is the craziest thing you've ever written about, whether it got published or not?

JA: Well, I suppose everything I write about is crazy in some aspect or another. It’s not like there are demons, werewolves and elves running around amongst us…or are there?

BK: Tell us one thing you've done in life, that readers would be most surprised to know.

JA: I grew up in a small community where I rode my horse to school everyday.

BK: What can we expect from you in the future?

JA: Moon Marked, it is a stand-alone title based upon a woman bounty hunter in a paranormal world…

This or That...

Coke or Pepsi? Neither. I’m not a soda drinker.

Night Owl or Early Bird? Early Bird!

Fantasy or Mystery? Both!

Pen/Paper or Computer? Computer!

Pizza or Burger? Burger!

Rock or Country? Rock!

Chocolate or Vanilla? Vanilla!

Beach or Mountains? Mountains!

Thank you so much for having us as one of your stops today. It has been great getting to know more about you and your book, and hope you will come back when the next release is out (*hint hint*)

Wishing you much success!

Scrambling to identify their attacker before joining the casualty list, Rory is forced to do the unthinkable, or watch Amber become a slave for his species.

In the battle against Shadows, demons and all variety of monsters come out to fight. Can one wolf learn to trust in time to save them all?

Excerpt The Dysus Dreamer:
A solid assassination operation takes one part opportunity, two parts discipline, and three parts disposition. Having two out of three this chilly Seattle evening, Slade considered himself in abundance of good fortune.
Parked in front of a solitary office building, in the zone clearly marked “No Parking,” Slade cleared his mind of distractions consisting of the little here and there that could creep in and throw him off, just a hair, but enough to jeopardize his mission. Satisfied, he slid out of the rental car and re-tucked a stylish black golf shirt monogrammed with “Constantine Vineyards” into a pair of crisp, steel gray slacks. In this particular scenario, image was crucial.
Tonight, the element discipline presented itself by his waiting for the precise moment to strike. He made a living analyzing people and their habits, so he knew his targets relaxed around the holidays and were less likely to see the danger lurking behind his smiling façade. The current festivity du jour was Christmas, and coupled with his gift, destined Slade a popular man. I'm counting on it.
He moved around to the trunk, where he heaved free a slatted, wooden case. It smelled of musky oak. The peaceful scent hinted at candlelit dinners shared with a long time lover. His jaw clenched. Not in my past and not in my future.
Slade lugged his precious cargo toward the sprawling metal office building. Immense, the structure stabbed farther into the heavens than any other in the area, yet fell short. Just like my target. Outwardly, Joe Larsen appeared a dedicated family man, a real pillar of the community whose flourishing internet and telecommunications business, ProCom, employed hundreds. In reality, the werewolf belonged to the Dirty Dozen, a group of the twelve most ruthless wolf Packs roaming the earth.
How ironic. I was once your target. A year ago, the Dozen kidnapped his cousin Amber, a half-demon, half-human. Able to keep a shifter from shifting, Amber's ability proved irresistible, since more times than not, the Dozen's meetings devolved into an unproductive, fur-flying brawl. We saved Amber, but left behind some unfinished business. Starting with Larsen, the wolves would learn a lesson...a demon’s memory rivals the most scorned woman, and paybacks were indeed a bitch.

Stranger At The Hellgate Book Blast - Free On Kindle

Stranger at the Hell Gate

Ash Krafton

Genre: urban fantasy

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Date of Publication: March 2013
ASIN: B00C14X6SG

Word Count: 20000

Cover Artist: Debbie Taylor

Book Description:

Jagger Sintallon, a half-demon warrior, has dedicated his existence to fighting demons who enter the world through Hell gates. A loner of conflicting ideals, he offers shelter to a troubled woman but knows he is too rough, too dangerous, and too cocky for her delicate nature.

Dedicated to Divine Will, Sonya Camael, a Seraph, is determined to discover why she is drawn to Jagger's doorstep and the reason behind her mission. She needs the demon's help but fears he may get himself killed before she can figure it out and the world slips into Hell's dominion.

Sonya faces grave danger with evil stalking her every move, and Jagger shouldn't care but realizes he cares more than he'd likely admit. Sonya knows Jagger cannot win this war alone, but will her divine intervention mean his imminent end? Or will just the right combination of Heaven and Hell set the world right once again?

Short Excerpt:

Jagger hung his head, looking very much out of patience. With an exasperated huff, he turned in place, his boots clomping. Cocky stance, head back, and eyes daring her to say something. But these things she only partially registered because when he turned to face her, his entire upper body—chest, face, arms—glowed with the marks of past insult and injury. And that sickle shape burned into the skin over his heart—
She whimpered, heart-sick to see him in this way. Her mother's blood cried out at the thought of what agony he must have endured to stand here now, so marred and wounded. Covering her eyes, she dispelled the Seraph sight and fought the tears.
"Hey." He was in front of her within moments, pulling her hands down and leaning to peer at her downturned face. "Hey, what's wrong?"
"You. You've been through so much. Just look at you."
"I'd rather not. I'm not a pretty guy."
"Jagger. These scars. You have countless hurts. I can't see a part of you that isn't injured." She raised her eyes, tears brimming on her lower lashes. "Let me help you."
"What, you're a plastic surgeon?"
She swallowed and regained part of her composure. "Better."
He looked alarmed and rocked back on his heels. "You don't mean—"
"Yes, I do." She held onto his hands and kept him from backing away. This felt right, this decision.
His eyes shifted. "Ah, I don't think it's a good idea, doll. Our kinds don't mix well."

The Genesis
Blood of Ages, Book One

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Publisher: Penrefe Publications

ISBN: 0955984556
ASIN: B00999FXZ0

Number of pages: 314
Word Count: 100,000

Cover Artist: K. L. Kerr

Book Description:

The vampires of Dayson city are preparing for war. Having lived in constant fear of the Archway Corporation for decades, desperation has forced them into action. Their solution is to bring the First vampire, Alistair, back from the dead, a warrior famed for eradicating entire armies in the name of his kind.

For fledgling vampire Catrina Malinka, the fabled return of some unknown deity falls low on her list of concerns. Between fending off strangers trying to kill her in her dreams and trying to rein in an uncontrollable power that no one else even understands let alone shares, Catrina is forced to fight her assumed role in the war against Archway, which threatens to send her down a path she doesn’t want to travel.

The first book in The Blood of Ages series, “The Genesis” is an urban fantasy about the inescapable nature of Fate and the corruption of power.

Excerpt: The First Feed

Catrina paid little notice to where they were headed, since she was too enrapt in the swirl of streetlights sweeping by the window to listen in on Fox and Rose’s conversation. Her attention broke occasionally when Rose laughed, which she did often. If Fox were the lion, as she’d imagined on their first meeting, that made Rose the hyena.
The nights in Dayson were never truly dark, and the days—which she would only ever be able to recall from memory from now on—were never bright. Skies in varying shades of grey were all that overlooked their fair city, and any break in infinite varieties of rain constituted good weather. Even so, her new eyes could make out the crescent moon floating amongst an ocean of stars as Rose parked the car outside a bar that looked like countless other rundown brick buildings scattered in amongst those made of concrete.
The music pulsed harsh and raw through the open doors, thunderous beats to dance to for those gathered inside the low-ceilinged, dark rooms. Rose left them at the entrance, quickly swallowed up by the mass of bodies.
Catrina followed Fox into the smoky room and was hit by a smell so fierce that it threatened to floor her. Beyond that of sweaty bodies laced with grime and grease from their days of hard labours, the unmistakable scent of blood rose in the air. So much stronger than what she’d sensed from Maria, and in such a tightly packed space, it came inescapably with every breath, like honey-sweet liquid iron sliding down her throat.
The people were all oblivious. No, not all of them. A few stood out, their movements fluid, more calculated. As they slipped through the mass, she noticed the path being created by people was wide enough for them both. The hunger sent sudden, urgent impulses that left her fingers twitching. She barely managed to keep at Fox’s back on the way to the bar, as a mist descended across her vision. So many people and so much blood pumping through frail bodies that seemed barely able to hold it in. Her head ached with the deafening sound of a hundred hearts thumping in time with the pounding bass.
In a far corner, Fox introduced her to a man, his clothes were the same colour as his raven hair, half-blended into the shadows. He didn’t need a name. Fox simply referred to him as “the Moderator.” The Moderator regarded her with hazel eyes too small for his face, tiny glinting gems set in alabaster skin, which snatched her, and the hunger’s, interest from the room’s other occupants. He offered her a hand as though proposing they dance. When she turned to Fox for an answer, he just nodded and left them. With butterflies in her stomach, she accepted the Moderator’s thin hand and let him guide the way.
“This is your first time feeding?” he asked in a soft voice, whispering in her ear to be heard over the music. Painful in its simplicity, the question left her insides churning. She just about managed a nod. “The hunger will torment you until you give it what it needs.” When she winced, he gripped her hand tighter; the pressure alleviated some of the pain. While not an especially attractive man, the Moderator’s presence was all-consuming, and his iron grip and piercing eyes ensured attention stayed on him, before the hunger could release her into the pack of waiting bodies. “I understand your pain, child, but the hunger must be appeased. Despite what you may think, you are not the one in control anymore. The hunger is its own master and you its slave. You will succumb to it when it craves its fill, or else you will both perish. Succumb often, and in careful doses, and given enough time, you will be able to control it completely.”
“And until then…?”
A jester’s smile stretched across the Moderator’s face. “Until then, you will feed like the rest of us.”
As they reached the edge of the crowd, her guide gestured to a man swaying out of time with the music, pupils dilated like saucers and mouth open wide. So this shaggy-haired stallion riding what appeared to be a permanent high would take her vampiric virginity. And while the hunger urged her forwards at the very thought, she saw reason to pause and tightened her grip on the Moderator’s hand.
“Don’t be afraid,” he said. “The hunger will show the way. And do not concern yourself with our friend’s wellbeing. Observe the skin.” He gestured the man’s shoulder, where she saw scant silver lines tracing all the way up his neck. The thin vest fitted to his shapely, muscled form proudly displayed the scars. “He is a donor. You will find many of their kind in places such as these. I can assure you, he is more than willing.”
When the Moderator released her, the hunger led on. For the next minute, she was no longer Catrina Malinka. She was the hunger. She may have forced the man easily twice her size up against the wall, leaning into him and savouring the musky scent rising from perspiring flesh. If he struggled or resisted, she couldn’t remember. He may have moaned as her fangs sliced through her gums and into the vein. As blood gushed like liquid fire, she too may have moaned, closing her eyes and letting the moment consume her.
New thoughts overwhelmed her sense of reason with each mouthful of blood pumping out of the fissure in his neck, as though for an instant she saw the world through this man’s eyes; the image of their naked bodies tangled together on an unmade bed in what she could only assume was this man’s shoebox of an apartment flashed across her vision.
Spurred, it seemed, by the same thought, he slid a hand up her back, trying to force her closer. But despite his urgency, he had all the strength of tissue paper when put against her. While she revelled in his weakness, the hunger subsided into anger the likes of which she’d never known.
Her dark eyes flashed open and fingers slipped around his shoulder, feeling the top of his spine underneath the thin stretch of skin. One quick twist, and he would be dead. Before she could get her fingers around his neck, strong hands pulled her away, which severed both the lustful thoughts and the absolute desire to destroy him.
The man struggled to breathe as he ran shaking fingers over his neck, but a lazy smile curled his lips nonetheless.
“Our saliva heals the wounds,” the Moderator said as she stared at her first “victim” lurching back into the throng of bodies. “The scarring only occurs from continuously providing donor services, or in cases where the human has been attacked. Here, the donors are safe and aware of what happens to them. Feeding out there—” He gestured to the bar’s entrance. “Is difficult and delicate when you choose not to kill. There will be certain situations where your actions can be more easily dismissed if you choose to feed on someone who does not know what you are.” Such sobering words set her eyes back on the Moderator, who regarded her cautiously, concern stretching lines on his face. “Tell me truthfully,” he said. “How did it feel?”
Without a second thought, she replied, “I wanted to kill him.”
