Happy Halloween! Interview & Giveaway for a Treat with Kersten Hamilton

I'm so excited to have this awesome author with us today! I love her writing and her books are amazing. Welcome to Immortality and Beyond Kersten Hamilton. May I offer you a beverage?

KH: I'll take a tantalizing tea, thank you!

BK:  I have read Tyger Tyger, (See my Review), which is now available in paperback and loved it! I'm currently reading In the Forests of the Night and it is just as good as the first! Now that we're all settled in my lair, I'm so de-bite-fully glad you stopped in.

KH: Um…what's that dripping from the fridge? I mean the red stuff? Never mind. Let's just get on with the interview!

BK: *grinning*

BK:  Please tell us a little bit about your current release...

KH: In the Forests of the Night is the continuing story of Teagan Wylltson, Finn Mac Cumhaill and all of the evil creatures that want to kill them. Action. Adventure. True love…lots of true love.

BK:  What inspired this particular novel/book?

KH: A goblin I met when I was a child, from The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald. Lina was a dog–like beastie with green eyes lit by amber fire, and a huge mouth with icicle–like teeth. Curdie, the hero of the story, could feel the real hand of any creature inside its flesh glove, and when Lina put her paw in his hand: “a shudder, as of terrified delight, ran through him…instead of the paw of a dog, such as it seemed to his eyes, he clasped in his great mining fist the soft, neat little hand of a child! The green eyes stared at him with their yellow light, and the mouth was turned up toward him with its constant half grin; but here was the child’s hand!”

When I read those lines I felt it. I felt the child’s hand inside a rough paw glove, and I knew I wanted to pull a child out of a goblin one day.

BK:  When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

KH: I’ve always known. Sure, I wanted to be an astronaut, an animal trainer, and sail on the Calypso with Jacques Cousteau, but it was always in addition to being a writer.

BK:  How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?

KH: I read old books. Seriously, I spend a lot of time in the classics. It does give me a different perspective on fiction…and life.

BK:  What was the hardest thing about writing this story?

KH: Life, actually. It was trying to shake my dreams out of me. I was surrounded by death, sickness and disaster. But I finished the book. Take that, life!

BK:  What character was your favorite to write for in this story? Why?

KH: In this book, it was Teagan because I got reveal the wonderful character she has inside to my readers.

BK:  Which was your favorite scene to write?

KH: I think it was the one where Gil, the phooka boy, called Finn a Sexy Beast. Or maybe when Finn pulled his shirt off and…well, you're just going to have to read the book for that one!

BK:  Will this become a series? If so, what inspired it to be a series?

KH: It was always going to be a trilogy, but…it may just expand.

BK:  Now for a little fun, and into your everyday life, What is a day in your life like?

KH: I thought you said we were going to have fun? I do this every day! Get up. Drink Coffee. Start writing. Go to the gym, or run errands. Then read, read, read! And in the evening…I write some more.

BK:  What do you like to do when you're not writing?

KH: I'm almost always writing. But when I get the chance, I do like to hunt dinosaurs through the badlands of New Mexico.

BK:  What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you?

KH: That I am carrying shrapnel in my arm. And I married the man who put it there. In his defense, he did kill the rattlesnake he was aiming for.

BK:  What do you like to read? Who is your favorite author?

KH: I read everything. Seriously. Right now I am reading Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler—just to see what he was like as a human—an evil human. But my favorite writer of all time is George MacDonald. He wasn’t a bit evil.

BK:  Please tell us one piece of advice you were given as an author that you carry with you when you write?

KH: It's advice from Jane Yolen: BIC. Butt in Chair. That's the only way to get the book done!

BK:  What is one piece of advice you can give to aspiring writers/authors?

KH: Read old books. If you want to stand out from the crowd of new writers, read and learn from old books.

BK:  What are you currently working on?

KH: A magical realism novel that deals with suicide, the Catholic Church, undead school administrators and bad reality shows.

BK:  Where can readers connect with you?

KH: At http://www.kerstenhamilton.com

BIO: http://home.comcast.net/~kerstenhamilton/aboutkersten.html

Synopsis: Teagan, Finn, and Aiden have made it out of Mag Mell alive, but the Dark Man’s forces are hot on their heels. Back in Chicago, Tea’s goblin cousins show up at her school, sure she will come back to Mag Mell, as goblin blood is never passive once awoken. Soon she will belong to Fear Doirich and join them. In the meantime, they are happy to entertain themselves by trying to seduce, kidnap, or kill Tea’s family and friends. Tea knows she doesn’t have much time left, and she refuses to leave Finn or her family to be tortured and killed. A wild Stormrider, born to rule and reign, is growing stronger inside her. But as long as she can hold on, she’s still Teagan Wylltson, who plans to be a veterinarian and who heals the sick and hurting. The disease that’s destroying her—that’s destroying them all—has a name: Fear Doirich. And Teagan Wylltson is not going to let him win.

Excerpt: Teagan Wylltson blinked, and tried to focus on her five–year–old brother. His best friend Lennie, a pudgy, pimpled eighteen–year–old was holding him up so that Aiden could see Teagan’s perch on the roof of the porch. Lucy, the sprite who had taken up residence in her brother’s hair, was zipping excitedly around his head.
“Come quick!” Aiden yelled again. “Thomas is growing feathers!”
“The man’s shape shifting.” Finn said. He had taken her hand to pull her to her feet, and he hadn’t let go. Every molecule in her was suddenly vibrating at a higher rate, and webs of electricity spread over her entire body. It felt good. Really good. But it did make it hard to focus.
“Where’s Mamieo, then?” Finn asked.
“She was sitting beside him when I went through living room,” Teagan said, dropping his hand and stepping away.
Focusing right now would be a good thing. Finn’s grandmother hadn’t been happy when they’d dragged a wounded shape shifter out of Mag Mell, but she’d promised not to harm the creature—so long as he didn’t do anything unnatural.
“Do you think she’ll consider this—?”
“Unnatural? I’m sure of it.”
“She wouldn’t—”
“Do away with the creature?” Finn rubbed his chin with the two good fingers of his wounded hand. “I doubt it. But I’d best go check on them just the same. Thomas might be needing some help.”

Giveaway: I would like to give away a signed hardcover copy of In the Forests of the Night! Simply leave a comment for Kersten telling her what you would do if you were being hunted by goblins, with your email address to enter. Contest ends Nov. 4.

GFP Book Tour Interview & Giveaway with Leslie D. Soule

Leslie Soule lives in Sacramento, California. Fallenwood is her first fantasy novel. She has received her B.A. in English from Sacramento State University and is currently working on her Master’s degree in English at National University.

Photo from Leslie's Website

Welcome to Immortality and Beyond Leslie. May I offer you a beverage?

A mystic brew would be great! Ooh….looks purple and misty…

Now that we're all settled in my lair, I'm de-bite-fully glad you stopped in.

BK:  Please tell us a little bit about your current release...
LS:  Well, I’m here promoting my novel Fallenwood, a fantasy novel that’s been chosen to be the Read For A Cure book at Decadent Publishing for October. It’s a story I wrote over the course of three years, and it follows the journey of a girl named Ash, as she finds her way into a fantasy world called Fallenwood.

BK:  What inspired this particular novel/book?
LS:  A lot of things, really. The main thing was that when my stepfather died, I was a month from turning nineteen years old and it felt like my world had ended. Both my stepfather and I were really interested in fantasy novels, and I started writing as a way of coping, back then.

BK:  When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
LS:  When I was very little, I wrote all sorts of crazy stories. I’ve wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. I’ve always written for fun, for escape, and as therapy.

BK:  How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?
LS:  That’s a difficult thing to do, since there are so many fantasy writers out there. One of the things I like to do, though, is read a lot, so I know what already exists.

BK:  What was the hardest thing about writing this story?
LS:  The hardest thing about writing it was writing about the relationship between Ash and Akaji. One of my reviewers noted that I didn’t want to touch the relationship with a ten-foot pole, and it’s because I based Akaji on an ex-boyfriend of mine, who died of cancer.

BK:  What character was your favorite to write for in this story? Why?
LS:  I really enjoyed writing about Greymalkin. He’s a talking cat, and I love animals, so the idea of one intrigues me.

BK:  Which was your favorite scene to write?
LS:  Hmm….tough question. My favorite scene to write was the one where the black unicorn appears, because I enjoy the concept of a black unicorn on a rampage.

BK:  Will this become a series? If so, what inspired it to be a series?
LS:  Originally, I didn’t plan on it being a series. However, I’m not ready to let the characters go just yet. Also, I’ve realized that there are a lot of things in the original that would benefit from a full realization that a sequel would give it. So I’ve been writing a bit of the sequel in-between working on my master’s degree.

BK:  Now for a little fun, and into your everyday life, What is a day in your life like?
LS:  A typical day would be that I wake up and go to work, make a cup of tea, listen to music during my work day, talk to my co-workers, and then go home and work on master’s degree course work. For now, that’s about it. My life hasn’t been too exciting lately.

BK:  What do you like to do when you're not writing?
LS:  When I’m not writing, I love to do martial arts. I love what a workout it is, how you get to improve your skills, meet new people, and I have a lot of fun doing it.

BK:  What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you?
LS:  That I nearly gave up on myself as a writer and scrapped Fallenwood early on. What kept me going with it was that I came to realize that the concept meant something to me – so I ended up re-writing it from nothing. I signed up for a creative writing course at my local community college, where I got to receive feedback and work on chapters, and that made all the difference between getting it written and becoming a published author, and not, I think.

BK:  What do you like to read? Who is your favorite author?
LS:  I absolutely love Jack London. I also really like Neil Gaiman. I’ve read many books by Brian Jacques.

BK:  Please tell us one piece of advice you were given as an author that you carry with you when you write?
LS:  During one of my courses, a professor of mine had us watch a few videos online. One of those videos was an interview of Dr. Cornell West, who said, “Never confuse your success with your greatness”. Another one was a writer named Louise Erdrich, who said, “Writing is a noble thing, really”. I repeat these quotes to myself a lot.

BK:  What is one piece of advice you can give to aspiring writers/authors?
LS:  The best two pieces of advice I can give are to not give up, and if at all possible, to sign up for a creative writing workshop. I gained invaluable experience from the one I took and it helped my writing immensely.

BK:  What are you currently working on?
LS:  I’m currently working on my master’s thesis, defending the writings of a philosopher named Quintilian. Other than that, I’ve been writing snippets of Fallenwood II, here and there.

BK:  Where can readers connect with you?
LS:  I have a Facebook page for Fallenwood, and they can also interact on my Coffee Time Romance forum, and on my website

Fallenwood—a land where magic is the life force, dragons are sages, and wizards good and evil battle for supremacy. When 23-year-old Ash is thrust into the middle of Fallenwood’s power struggles, she is also forced to face her own inner battles. Life on Earth was hard enough on Ash, who is locked in grief for her stepfather. Now, the fate of Fallenwood rests on her shoulders. She must destroy the Great Crystal—the catalyst for all the land’s magic. As the kingdoms prepare for war, Ash must look inside to find the power to save the world, and herself.

Excerpt:

The dragon’s eyes glowed, for a flickering moment, with white light.

“Ash,” the dragon continued, “Welcome to Terra Illumina…or as it is more commonly known, Fallenwood.” Then a fierce roaring laugh erupted from the stone, as though the dragon thought the new name a joke. “A dark, difficult, dangerous path lies before you, Ash Kensington.”

Ash’s heart grew heavy. In truth, she knew that she was destined to some terrible, dark fate. For so long, her life was filled with sadness and doubt, and one horrible thing after another. What else can I hope for?

“But Ash, you must not lose hope. Our world needs you..."

Review for Yvette's Haven by Tina Folsom

Yvette's Haven by Tina Folsom - awesome addition to the series. Again Folsom delivered, always giving more than you expected and providing an outstanding story.

Yvette. Yvette. Yvette. Did we ever think she would find love?

Sent to protect an upcoming movie star, Kimberly, after she becomes uncomfortable with Zane, (who'd have ever thought that?), Yvette escorts her to a premiere party. Making herself aware of her surroundings, Yvette meets a gorgeous man who entices her in more ways than one. What she doesn't understand is this gorgeous man, Haven, will soon become her kidnapper and has a few tricks up his sleeve to make it happen.

Haven and his brother Wesley have been searching for their little sister Katie since their mother's death. When Wesley finds himself in trouble and held captive by a witch named Bess, Haven - a bounty hunter - has no choice but to follow the witch's demands. Bess wants Kimberly and knows she's being guarded by vampires. Creating a concoction sure to deem a vampire unconcious, she sends Haven on his way letting him know that if he fails to deliver the goods, Wesley dies.

With surprising twists, amazing characters, and a story to keep you turning the pages, this was an amazing addition to the Scanguards Series. Folsom never lost Yvette's true personality during the process of her falling in love and that is what I love about her writing. Yvette is one hard core bad ass chic, and she still kicks butt even while falling for her true love.

I love this series, I have yet to hate a character they are all phenomenal, and now I cannot wait for Zane's story, the next installment. I'm very anxious to see how his story unfolds considering his personality and...let's say crazy quirk.

A native of Germany, Tina Folsom immigrated first to England in 1991 and then to the USA in 1999 where she lived in various large cities before she made San Francisco her permanent home.

While writing has always been her passion, the trained CPA knew she had to get a "real" job first. Due to the popularity of her books, Tina was able to quit her day job in February 2010 and now writes full time.

Tina is a member of the San Francisco Romance Writers of America. She also meets regularly with her two critique partners who write historical and paranormal romance.

Review of Monarch by Michelle Davidson Argyle

Monarch by Michelle Davidson Argyle is one of those stay up all night because you can't put it down reads - which is exactly what I did.

Lillian is an emotional woman holding the past close to her heart. When Nick steps back into her life, the past comes flooding back like a broken dam bringing danger and mixed feelings with it.

Nick is on the run, accused of murder. As he sets out to prove his innocence, running to the only place he thinks is safe, Lillian not only provides a safe haven for his girls who also are in danger from his past, but for his heart as well.

Nick was on assignment when Kyle, who he thought he could trust, turns on him. Wanting the power from Ferriera's Cartel, Kyle kills who he thought was Ferriera's wife, Catarina, and places the blame on Nick. Now that Nick has gone back to Brazil to clear his name, obtaining pertinent information froM Catarina against her husband, Kyle must make sure the information to clear his name doesn't make it back to the CIA. Catarina's motive, keeping her son Alex from growing up like his father, Nick's motive, proving his innocence to move on with his life, to love freely and live happily ever after.

Argyle did such a fantastic job with this story. The Monarch butterflies was a brilliant addition to this thriller, and jumping from the past to the present to let us know Nick's backstory and what is currently happening was so effectively written, I never got lost at any point.  Argyle's writing style is just phenomenal.

I loved Nick from the get-go. He is strong and silent, holding many secrets as the turmoil within him of wanting to tell all was played out.

Lillian is very emotional, trying to deal with the past and the present, realizing that Nick is all she wants.

Devan is strong and protective of his mother, all the while wishing happiness for all.

I didn't have any problem connecting with any of these characters, and the plot was so good that you could not put it down until you found out how it all ended. Kudos to Argyle for such a great story and I am so glad I had a chance to review her work with Monarch. I can't wait to see more from her and I gladly give Monarch five flaming roses.

Hong Kong Stopover Review

Hong Kong Stopover
By: Jacquelyn Webb

Josie Sutherland is an Australian journalist with high hopes of a great story to catch her big break. She instead is always sent to conferences that are dull and uninteresting. She is sent to the American Computer Conference and on her way back she has a three day stopover in Hong Kong.

A disappointed & let down Josie is waiting to catch her flight from Hong Kong to Australia when she notices a good-looking, dressed for success man browsing in a bookstore. A glance from the man, forces Josie to think about her fiancé James. Who she is not in love with...she is just going through the motions of a comfortable relationship.

The man seems uneasy and on edge about buying this book, Josie notices. She just mentally shrugs it off. But, then 2 well-dressed men attempt to rob the man and she throws one of her bags to stop them. This action leads to her meeting the bookstore man whose name is Carey Court. As chance would have it, they are both from Melbourne.

The police bring them in to look at mug shots and to get statements and tell them it won’t take long and they will still be able to catch their flights home. They believe it may be a case of mistaken identity. So, Carey and Josie are kept at a hotel until their flight that evening. At the hotel, Carey and Josie get to know each other. They arrive at airport that evening and there is a turn of event that leads to them not catching their flight home.

They are brought back to hotel, where they will stay for the night. This is where the wild ride begins. I don’t want to give too much away. But through these events, Josie begins to question Carey and his involvement with the events, deal with feelings for Carey and hoping the events will lead to her big breakout story.

I enjoyed this book. I really enjoyed the interaction and even comedic moments between Carey and Josie. The characters were believable and you can relate to the characters. It also was action packed and quick paced and the romance was well written. Not too strong or mushy.

All in all a good read. Look forward to further books from this author.

**** 4 stars.

VBT with Michael Barclay - Hill 170 Review & Giveaway

I'm a day behind on this as with all the rain we've been having and my house is so old I've run into some major technical difficulties. We've been without TV, internet and I'm still without phone. Living in the hills haha. I'm very happy to have Michael Barclay as my guest today though, and his book Hill 170 is a fantastic read. Michael was awesome to give you a chance to win an e-copy of Hill 170 and this is one book that you will be glad to read.

Having received two Presidential Commendations while serving in USAF intelligence in the Far East puts him in the perfect position to pull readers into the tension-filled world of clandestine work. He earned my BA in East Asian Studies at George Washington University.
He has an extensive background in freelance writing, articles dealing primarily in technical topics such as economics, geopolitics and computers. He has also co-written several technical software manuals and one retail How To-esque guide (published by Sam’s) for Motion Graphics. HILL 170 is his first novel.
The ‘whatever else’ is what he'd like time to consider. With the release of HILL 170 he has been very focused on getting the ‘description’ as tight as possible - He's been thinking ‘compact’. For ‘whatever else’ he needs to reverse that and think ‘expand’. Being (a bit of) a perfectionist, he'd hate to dash something off.

China, North Korea, South Korea and the United States – the major forces in the world’s most dangerous stand off.
Sergeant Dodge Bryce and the small team of USAF intelligence ops on Hill 170 keep the region safe. But who will keep them safe when a shocking incident costs the group fully one third of their number – overnight?
Now gravely short handed, the Hill faces its ultimate worst case
scenario – a PRC spy in their midst. And Bryce, his remarkable string of intel discoveries having cost the PRC too much, is now the #1 target of China’s master assassin.
It’s a race against the clock as East and West square off in a
chillingly authentic story of defections, betrayals and clandestine
intelligence operations that you will never forget.

My Review:

Hill 170 by Michael Barclay

I always love a book that is based on real life experiences. Those always make the best reads and this is a great read. Having the military lingo was really cool and makes you see just how it is when men and women are in the service and what they may have to go through. Though I've never really read a military thriller before, I have to say that Barclay has definitely not turned me away to be open to read more.

From the very first page, as your thrown right into a dramatic scene you will find yourself turning the pages to see what happens next. I was literally on the edge of my seat at times. From spies to murder, this couldn't have been a written any better. Character development was fantastic, and I could vividly see the plot laid before me. Barclay is a fantastic writer that captures the reader's interest and I can't wait to see more from him. I give Hill 170 4 Flaming Roses.

If you would like to win a copy of Hill 170, simply leave a comment for Michael with your email address. If you have a military experience that sticks in your mind, share that with him as well. Contest will run until next Thursday and I will announce the winner on Friday, October 14.
