Her tattoo doubles as her feline familiar: loving, protective, dangerous, and with a life of its own. It’s also her deepest secret and draws enemies who desire its power for themselves.

Connor has no idea why Angelique left him, but he’s determined to win her back. As a werewolf, he has secrets of his own. Now his alpha is ready to force him to pair with an ex-girlfriend he can’t stand unless he can find Angelique and claim her as his mate. But even as their secrets threaten to keep them apart, hidden enemies seek to destroy their chance at love forever.

My Review:

The title of this book couldn't have been any better. It fits perfectly, and sooo not what you are expecting. This is the first book I've read by Ms. Makela, and I have to say...WOW! Wow factor #1!

Skin Deep has amazing originality, which is such a nice breath of fresh air

Wow Factor #2!

The book started off with a bang, jumping right into the action and keeping you wanting to know more. “Your time is running out. While our preference is for you to find a true mate, I’m not above assigning someone.” Wow factor #3!

I liked the characters, though I would have liked to have seen Angelique, the main character, be a bit stronger in her role. For someone that knows her supernatural ability, she seemed very weak. Almost the damsel in distress role, which I didn't care for much.

Connor, on the other hand, strong and hot, Hot, HOT! Heh hmm...He can have my back, anytime. Oh, get your minds out of the gutter!

Monica, the fling in a time of need...someone PLEASE give me some duct tape!

There were times when I thought the book went to fast, and this caused the story not to flow super well for me. I would have liked to have had more tension built up, to really feel what the characters were feeling. This especially goes for the steamy sex scenes. Yes, they were steamy, but I think the sexual tension could have been played up a bit more. I also would have liked a bit more backstory too, to have a better understanding of the whole idea behind the story. This is a very short read though, having read it in just a couple of hours, and is only Book One.

Final Thought: As a first time author for me, Sarah Makela has my vote. I loved the whole premise behind this story, the uniqueness of the plot & characters, and the quickness of the read as I don't get much time for reading anymore. I will definitely be reading Book Two. I would also highly recommend Skin Deep to anyone that loves a good, fast paced, paranormal read. Only because I wished for a tad more, (tension and backstory) is it getting only 3.75 Wolf Moons.
